Bill of Materials

IN GENERAL: All junctions of permanent members must be glued and fastened except as noted. Screws or ring-type boat nails are interchangeable except as noted. Plastic resin, resorcinol, or epoxy glue can be used; the latter is preferable due to gap-filling properties and high strength. All plywood should be at least AB-EXT grade. Solid wood members can be any good grade mahogany, 1" nominal stock (often 3/4" in actual thickness) re-sawn to thicknesses and widths noted. Two sheets 4' x 8' plywood are used for planking, bow, and transom if cut and laid out with care. Use 1/4" plywood or the nearest comparable thickness in millimeters. Do NOT scale the plans for exact dimensions, although estimates can be made by this method where a scale is noted.
FORMS: These temporary members can be made from any 3/4" thick (1" nominal) wood - don't use plywood. Nail junctions without glue. Cut notches to match size of chine, keel, and sheer members.

FASTENINGS:
  • Screws: Flathead wood type, bronze or hot dipped galvanized
  • 1-1/4" #8 - 100
  • Nails: Ring type boat nails, bronze or Monel*
  • 3/4" #14 = 1 pounds
  • 1" #12 = 2 pounds
  • 1-1/4" #12 - 1 pound
  • *Flat-head wood screws optional, but more expensive.
  • Adhesives: Epoxy adhesives are advised throughout the construction. These may be an epoxy adhesive or epoxy resin. Epoxy resins should be used with thickeners (silica or equal) per the instructions with the resin and/or thickening agent. The amount required is difficult to estimate. A quart container of epoxy should be enough, if used judiciously.
