PADDLEBOARD BILL OF MATERIALS

LUMBER:Philippine mahogany or Sitka spruce are recommended where strength and durability are important. Other woods commonly used in boatbuilding may be used if available and proven in the locale. Where low cost and light weight are important, and durability is secondary, the use of clear white pine commonly available may be used for all solid members. Plywood must be EXTERIOR grade, and while Douglas-fir is listed, other waterproof types such as mahogany veneers, may be used and in thinner panels if desired. Sizes of lumber are listed as standard lumberyard material. For example, 1" stock is listed as standard lumberyard size and will usually net material 3/4" in thickness. Stock listed 1-1/4" will usually finish 1-1/16" to 1-1/8" net. Widths are listed net or as close as possible to the noted dimension. For example, a 2" x 6" piece will usually net a member 1-1/2" thick and 5-1/2" wide. Material for members should be grouped together and purchased in random-random sizes and resawn by the builder to reduce costs. All lengths listed allow surplus for trimming to size.
Abbreviations used are: Mah = mahogany; Sp = spruce: DF = Douglas-fir; EXT = Exterior.
