Disassembly Procedure for 10o and 12o QC
Split-Case V-Drive Models 61060-62560-D

For changing gears

  1. Remove bearing cap (#2) from back side of V-drive.
  2. When cap is removed, you will see a bearing (#4) with a snap-ring groove in it. Warm the V-drive case (#8) around the bearing with a torch. Using Bearing Puller (CE-8, Item 90-934), insert it into snap-ring groove and pull bearing out by using the jack screw in the center of the puller, and pushing against center of shaft (#17).
  3. When the bearing is removed, you may take the back half (#8) of the V-drive off by removing the ten 5/16" bolts (#6 & #27) that hold the front half(#12), back half (#8), and mounting plate (#10) together. Use the jack screw in the center of the bearing cap (#28) on lower portion of V-drive and push against center of the shaft to remove back casing.
  4. When back half of V-drive is off, remove bearing spacers (#14 & #26), that rest on top of each of the gears (#15 & #25) in the V-drive.
Caution: DO NOT mix up the spacers as they are NOT interchangeable.
The thicker of the two spacers goes on the lower shaft, the thinner on the top shaft.
  5. When the spacers are removed, remove the top gear first, then the lower gear (which normally is the tapered gear). You now have the gear box disassembled and are ready to install another set of gears. (If the tapered gear is on top, reverse this procedure.)

For complete disassembly, follow above steps and continue below:

  6. Remove shift crank (#44) and shift fork (#43) with in & out side cover (#47). Remove seal cap (#20), lock assembly (#37-40) and in & out housing (#41).
  7. Support front half (#12) from the inside of the case on bearing bosses and press out shaft (#17) from the keyway side of shaft. Turn front half over and support case and press out in & out shaft (#23) from the splined side of the shaft.
  8. Warm the front half with a torch and drop out beariings (#18 A amp; B). Remove shifting dog (#35) from splined shaft (#36). Press out (#36) from housing (#41). Warm housing and remove bearing (#54) and oil seal (#53).

The V-drive is completely disassembled at this point and is ready ro re-assemble.

Reverse the disassembly procedures. Check to see if V-drive turns freely. Put an indicator on the side of the keyway on the top shaft. Rock the shaft right and left while the bottom shaft is held stationary. Total indicator reading for backlash should be .008 to .010.

For more clearance

The bottom front spacer will have to be shortened. For every .005 in thickness taken off the spacer, it will give .001 clearance. The amount taken off the front will have to be added to the back spacer.

For too much clearance

The front spacer will have to be thicker. The amount added to the front will have to be taken off the back spacer.

Bearing clearance

The bearing cap depth plus the gaskets should measure the same distance as what the bearing protrudes from the case.
