Re: The Zip is on the NILE, Egypt

The 40 seems ideal weight-wise, but as you mentioned, there is the problem of steering and ignition. I would think that the Zip transom can adequately support the weight of the 55, but there are a few things to consider. One is to plan on building a motor well. This will provide additional bracing t...

Re: Agenda

Donald, The Gatherings are in every way more relaxed than an ACBS show, if that's what you're wondering. More relaxed, more welcoming, and honestly... more engaging. That's certainly the case compared to every ACBS event that I have been to. There's far less of a "museum display" feeling a...

Re: Food

That looks great Bill. Just remember, everything you bring has to be rolled across about 200 feet of dock. But I'll give you a hand if I'm available. I'll just add to that, for folks who haven't been there before, that due to the geography of the location, cell phone service is almost non-existent ...

Congratulations, Ted! It's well-deserved!

That's also a very familiar-looking Squirt in the background... ;)

Re: Squirt in Manitoba

Yes, you do have a great start with setting your chines. You're doing fine. I agree with both PeterG and JimmY that you should completely finish installing the sheers (on both sides) before bothering with the chines. It will give you a much better visual reference for trying to get this "chine ...

As I recall, Dave Grason reserved FL1 but later said he wasn’t gonna be able to make it.

Looks like we’re gonna have a big group this year.

Billj, that breakfast sounds good lol! Just a hot cup of coffee on the dock will be perfect! :)

Re: Who's Going and Where

Well, I just called on the chance that one of the cabins might be open. At least as of this morning, they told me that all the floating cabins are still booked up for G12.

Of course, that can change quickly, I know. But that's the status as of 90 seconds ago...

Re: Squirt in Manitoba

On the Squirt is the keel supposed to be parallel to the setup level? Trouble is I don't know  I think that it must be parallel between the transom and frame 1. As you suggested I've taken a straight edge to the plans, but we're talking an 8 inch drawing with quite thick lines, so it's really...

Also, noob question, but probably important -- frames are counted stern->bow right? So the center frame of a Squirt is Frame 1?

Yes, that's right. What helps me to remember this is to think of the transom as "Frame Zero" & count forward from there.

Re: Squirt in Manitoba

You don’t need to shim the stem notch. The keel is designed to bend as it meets the stem notch. If the “hump” caused by bending the forward end of your keel causes the aft end of the keel to be level.... I’d say you lucked out. In the end, you want the keel to be flat from the transom up to frame 2....

Eddie,

Welcome aboard! You should come up to the Boatbuilders Gathering in September. It's just outside Chattanooga. You can meet quite a few of the folks here on the forum, see their boats & take a few rides. It's a great experience to get you kick-started on your project.

Re: The Zip is on the NILE, Egypt

Ayman, Here are links to a couple of posts on my blog that show photos of overlapping the fiberglass cloth and the process of "feathering" the overlapped edge. This basically means sanding the edge of the first layer of fiberglass cloth so that it tapers down to zero. This helps to create ...
