Re: Porpoising

I added the Smart Tabs, and it completely cured the problem. Now I've got a plowing problem, so I need to work next weekend on the tab settings and motor trim. I'm convinced, though, that the tabs have gotten me to a much better boat.

Re: Porpoising

The boat doesn't have any trouble getting on plane, it's just that without a fair amount of weight in the front when the engine is more than 1/2 throttle it porpoises badly. I got some Smart Tab SX tabs in the mail yesterday. Going to install them and see if that helps. If not, I'll probably get 50-...

Re: Porpoising

I'm pretty sure it's flat, but will check it.

Re: Porpoising

Fergal Butler: Sweet looking ride. Maybe down the road I'll try something that ambitious.

Re: Porpoising

I'm confused on the issue of trim. If I'm reading the posts right, Soloboat you are saying I need to trim out, and gdcarpenter you are saying I need to trim in more. My instinct is that I need to trim in more because I don't have porpoising when someone sits in the front of the boat, so it seems to ...

Re: Porpoising

I looked at the whale tails, but the only ones I saw that would fit a 15 hp motor bolt through the cavitation plate and that would void my warranty with Suzuki. I've also heard that trim tabs do a better job of adding lateral stability.

Porpoising

I finished my 14' Power Skiff and launched it last weekend with a 15hp 4-stroke. Perhaps not unexpectedly, it has horrible bow rise with only one rider and bad porpoising. (When it was just me in the boat, and at low speeds, but brother in law nicknamed the boat the SS Viagra). I've got the motor tr...

Re: Wood filler with Epoxy

I just bought some Famowood to use based on some recommendations elsewhere. Will it darken like mahogony does, though, when epoxy is applied to it?

Thanks all. That's kind of what I figured I would hear, but thought it worth asking.

Epoxy on Masking Tape

I have painted the inside and outside of the hull, and am now epoxying the sheers. If I mask the hull with painters tape so I don't get epoxy on the hull, do I have to pull it up right away so the insides of the tape don't get stuck to the hull, or will I be okay if I leave it down so I can do sever...

Re: Varnish Questions

Thanks. I ordered the no sand Epifanes. I think I've about had my fill of sanding.

Varnish Questions

Not sure if this is the right forum or not, but it seemed to be the closest for my question. I'm getting close to the point where I will be applying spar varnish to the shears and middle seat of my PowerSkiff build, and I've got a couple of questions: 1. Which varnish brand do people like the best? ...

Re: How to make wood colored resin putty

Do you have any sense of what the ratio should be of Cabosil to wood flour, or is it just trial and error?

Re: How to make wood colored resin putty

Can Famowood wood filler be used on a boat build? I would be using it to fill small gaps between seat and hull, and the inner sheers and the breasthook. Famowood has a mahogany putty that I hear is a good color match.

How to make wood colored resin putty

Happy New Year all. I'm trying to make some resin putty to match the mahogany of my center seat and breasthood on my Power Skiff build. I mixed mahogany sanding dust with resin, but got a dark brown color that is much darker than the seat and breasthook (which have a couple of coats of epoxy on them...
