Not such a fun guy
Due to work and other commitments I haven't had much time to spend working on the boat (95% complete but last 5% is taking forever). Yesterday I got a chance to uncover the boat and get ready for some work when I noticed what looked like the paint had bubbled on one of the vertical ribs. I grabbed a...

Re: hovercraft builders
You may be able to have your cake and eat it too, Bearcat + Hovercraft = Surface Effect Ship. I would really like to build a SES one day, maybe a little above my technical know how, but a 30' ship doing 100+ mph with a reasonable amount of HP...

There is a simple but time intensive way to do this. Get a protractor, string, and notebook. Put a pushpin into the drawing along the CL somewhere and attach the string to that point. Using the protractor and string, measure along the CL till you hit the bottom of that frame, record the distance. Mo...

I think the problem you will have to overcome is the relative low rpm a paddle wheel works at. I don't know for sure but I am guessing 100 rpm max, after that I am thinking you will destroy the paddle wheel. If you are adventurous take a look at go-devils or gator tails and see if you can take advan...

I think a lot depends on when you buy. The price of steel and aluminum fluctuate all the time sometime you can play your cards right or sometime you will take a bath. My favorite quote regarding pricing: Some think it will go up, others think it will go down. Whatever you do will be wrong, act immed...

Thanks everyone for the replies. I have started a list of terms that I hear and will have a glossary shortly. The other problem that I am running into is that everyone has their own term for the same thing, gets a little confusing sometimes. I work for an offshore design company. My boss and a coupl...

Help with Welding Terms
Does anyone know of a book that discusses welding in terms that are used in the field? I have recently been transferred from an office to a shipyard and I have no idea what these guys are talking about. My first day everyone was talking about "butter". I realize I will probably pick this up over tim...

I used a roto zip with the flexible dremel-like attachment to enlarge the holes in my build. I used a cone shaped rasp bit to get it done. I don't see any problem with cutting through the battens with a router as long as you only do one at a time, stagger the cuts, and put a sister piece (double) th...
