Re: New Glen-L 14 Build

It took me nearly 5 years to build my Glen L 14. Make a list, knock off small jobs here and there. Never watch TV, and uninstall Facebook from your phone. You'll find the time.

Re: New Glen-L 14 Build

Congrats on making first cuts. Let me suggest that you consider running a roundover bit over the parts of the frames that will be facing "in" to the boat after you glue the frames together. In hind sight I would certainly have done it. Just a slight roundover, 1/8" perhaps. It is pret...

Re: Ballast Lead

Shot has space between the balls. So it's 66% as dense as solid lead. You really want to melt the lead.

Re: 14 or 15 sloop rigging costs.

Depends a lot, I got on of these http://www.duckworksbbs.com/tools/swage-it/ and made up my own stays. But I paid ~£800 sterling for a nice set of sails. You can get cheaper sails, right down to Poly Tarp at the extreme, but by the time you price in the mast, boom, standing rigging, sails, running r...

Re: I got to go sailing

Yes. That was for a tarp. Your tent sounds like a better plan. I'd suggest considering adding an anchor well at the bow. I wish I had.

Re: A new mast for The Lady Caroline?

The DM4 aluminium mast seems to be very strong The stiffness is Ix = .548 in^4 ~ 30.46 cm ^4 Iy = .732 in^4 ~ 22.81 cm ^4 The selden mast for the flying dutchman (selden's strongest dinghy mast section) is Ix = 27.1 cm ^4 Iy = 16.9 cm ^4 Is DM4 way over specified for the Glen-L 14? Could I use the S...

I got to go sailing

This weekend, I got to go out sailing twice (Thanks C), once in Ramor and once in Gowna. Two long narrow lakes, where the wind tends to blow along the length of the lake. Mostly I got to sail on my own, but I also took the little ones for a quick spin. The winds were mostly light on both days, but I...

Re: A new mast for The Lady Caroline?

There's a video of me lowering the mast on my Glen L 14, with the small stand under the stern to stop her tipping up as I walk aft when she in on the trailer... http://davesboat.blogspot.ie/2016/08/lowering-mast.html The stand is just a hinged tripod - an a frame and an arm - with a cord and cleat t...

Re: A new mast for The Lady Caroline?

It turns out that a birdsmouth would use MORE wood than just making it from two halves, and hollowing out the middle. The standard sizes that wood comes in are just the wrong size, I'd need to get quite big pieces and machine away a lot of wood. It's almost certainly going to be rectangular, 2 piece...

A new mast for The Lady Caroline?

The first mast I built for my Glen L 14, was sadly, somewhat crooked. It's come time to resolve that. I did choose to use an alloy mast track, rather than a bolt rope, which makes it nice and easy to raise and lower the mast. And I think I will do the same again. The design calls for a 2.5" x 3...

Re: Glen-l 14 mast ?

I made up a tripod, with a flat plate to support the stern of the boat while I'm on the trailer. With that in place, I can walk to the stern, I have a pivot in the mast foot, I put the pivot into place and just lift the mast and walk it forward. I have a line that I run from the forestay to the bow ...
