Rudders

Does anyone know how a fishtail rudder would work on a Columbia 23T? or how about an articulating airfoil rudder, or doesn't it really matter? Would a piece of 3/8" aluminum plate do just fine??? Billy Z.

Re: Progress pics and questions on Aluminum Double Eagle build

Had a back operation and out of everything for a while that's why this post is 2 years late. anyway I have made 3 fixed shaft surface drives, the last one on my Double Eagle. With that engine and horsepower I ended up putting a contoured piece of 3/8" aluminum- 2' wide x 4' long ( V'd to hull v...

homemade surface drive unit

Hi Billy -Better late than never!! Just joking, but I am really excited to hear from someone who has built the same (albeit heavily modifed) boat in aluminum. I have received alot of great advice here, but not alot of info specific to an aluminum build. Sorry to hear about your accident - A year is...

Re: Progress pics and questions on Aluminum Double Eagle bui

hi North ...BillyZ here...Looked and saw your Double Eagle. Looks great. I used 1/4" x 4' x 12' bottom plating butt welded together on the frames on my Double Eagle and along with stretching the hull to 28' the bottom plating did not bend the same as 1/8" plate. The biggest adjustment was ...

Re: Slight keel

Billy Z here....When I built my Mai Tai out of aluminum I put a 2" keel running the whole length w/no taper at the transom. My swim platform/outboard bracket was 32" long if I remember correctly and not an extension of the hull bottom. At planning speeds I got a slight cavitation at the pr...

Flat bottom boat w/ outboard near bow.

I was diving at a local quarry and met an older gent that told ne about a flat bottom boat he thinks was made by an older company called "Sea Fire Boats". He had two of them, one hull was 30' long flat bottom, 8' beam, a pacific battleship type bow, little or no upward curve at the bow, a ...

"Z" bow cat

Hi again, its been a while. earlier this spring I re-did my surface drive/prop pocket and strut with a much better design that lets the water flow flat and even to the propeller. I was kinda in a hurry to get it to the ocean before and had a lot of cavitation problems(my own fault for hurrying). Wel...

Re: Dry Stack is where it's at ... Conversion Thoughts?

BillyZ here...The Iveco diesel in my Double Eagle is a truck engine...I designed the motor box to have plenty of ventilation..so far with out a fan. All I have is an exhaust coupler just after the exhaust manifold that has raw water run to it for the exhaust pipe. The raw water comes in through a th...

Re: Double Eagle I/O Option Weight

JBRoberts, billyz here...The DE has a pretty flat run in the stern...all the weight I put on my stern- scuba tanks weight belts, gear bags, coolers, a diesel engine(800 to 1000llbs), tranni(never weighed any of them or looked it up), not to mention people. I figure the tranni weighs around 200lbs by...

Hello everybody....new to this and here we go... I really enjoyed building my first boat in (around) 1988 ( Wanderlust/aluminum) so I had to do it again. I've also built the Mai Tai out of aluminum, the River Rat (a really cool boat) and my present dive boat the Double Eagle. I've had the Eagle in s...
