Re: Flotation foam

I have the thought of empty air chambers under the decks. since we are building a wood boat, with all the plans & patterns, we may be able to pattern a air chamber fitted between the frames, and bolted under the decks. Removeable for inspection and cleaning, and air provides good buoyancy. made out ...

you need to get away from white oak,
it is grossly over-rated

Re: At a loss.... fairing

Take a hand plane, drill & tap 2 holes on its side, make yourself a long leg of hardwood that sticks out the side, long enough to lay on the adjacent longitudinal, attach it to said holes, this long leg gives you a means to keep the hand-plane on the geographic-plane where you want to be.

Re: At a loss.... fairing

As I faired going forward, the sheer became a small triangle, I laminated layers to the inside to regain thickness and strength in the sheer.
I think many others do the same, correct?

Re: 20ft Texas Barrel

For exhaust, I found SS thinwall tubing from a online fabrication shop.
The SS tubing was cheaper than flex exhaust hose.

Re: Neel's Palm Beach 22 build

By looking at Neel's build, it has more frames, more battens, and heavier scantlings than some of the Glen-L designs that have a big block in them.
That is what I was really alluding to.

Re: Off Center Engine Hatch, thoughts?

plank to match
you can even lay that right odd plank such that it covers the hatch & bulkhead together, then later cut out the opening for hatch to open.
that way all the grain color, grain pattern, grain lines, all line up

Re: Neel's Palm Beach 22 build

G’day Neel, I too am building the palm beach 22. I have found your posts extremely helpful along the way as you are a few steps ahead of me in the build. I am confident we are both working off the same plans. Construction methods and techniques may vary a little between our builds as I have used my...

Re: 16' Ski Boat Restoration

I see the spraying worked a little better for you. Yes, with practice you can get spraying to look quite good. You seem to have a good gloss there, plenty of wet-out. A great deal of orange peel will go away with time, as the paint cures, it shrinks, and some orange peel will shrink away. When I was...

Re: transom vs. well mounted

I been watching this thread for awhile, watching what comes up. The maintenance items mentioned above, to me, seem trivial. If the OP Little Hunk plans provide for a FULL TRANSOM and a outboard motor in a well, and if the OP is on the Great Lakes, then the FULL transom is a no brainer. The great lak...

Re: 16' Ski Boat Restoration

I sprayed Imron when Imron was brand new to the industry. It was the first polyurethane on the market. DuPont held the technology. Lot's of people couldnt figure out why it same 3quarts to the gallon, nor understand why it never dried. This was the beginning of a new era in paint technology, and a l...

Re: 16' Ski Boat Restoration

When spraying, orange peel is caused by 2 things; too thick paint, or, too low air pressure, or, both. If you are comfortable spraying paint, then dump the marine paints and go get automotive spray paint. There is so many names of paints nowadays, it becomes blurred what they are trying to sell you,...
