Re: Suggested Outboard Power

Yamaha recently introduced a new 25hp 4 stroke similar to their 25hp and Mercs 25hp 2 stroke weight at 126 lbs weight. Pretty amazing. But yes the expense would throw off the purpose.

Older ratings are flywheel rated as well. When was the conversion to propshaft hp? Somewhere in the 80's?

Glassing the top of my Tuffy

Its been years since Ive been on here. Think I left off having a 650xs merc in my possession, briefly. Since then my Tuffy has been in storage unfortunately not claiming any fame. Bought a fishing boat instead, found the love for archery and kind of stepped away from it. I'm looking to glass the top...

Re: Malahini w/90 Etec

If I may chime in, a 90 etec is probably their best engine right now. There are lighter 90hp motors but not as far as high tec. By far the lightest 90hp O/B was the Nissan 2 cylinder 90hp weighing in at 181 lbs. Then the Yamaha 90 at 261 pounds. Then the Mercury 90 ELPTO at 303 lbs. The Etec is pret...

Tuffy conversion

I built a Tuffy with dad almost a decade ago. In time, since, I have nearly grown out of it... Not really but you know what I mean. I was looking at crackerbox plans and thought of converting the Tuffy to a rear cockpit front engine type. I know shes 2 feet shorter but the same beam. Terms of power ...

Mini V-Drive

Anyone put a/made a V-Drive reduction transfer case that was installed into a smaller runabout? I'm thinking Tuffy of mine. First off why not. Lots of small marine engines that are suitable. Casale V drives are nice. I've done soon research on belt drives. I'm going to leave this brief to allow some...

Re: jack plate on transom

For what size? What boat are you considering? Intent on using it? Tons of factors. Hydraulic, manual? Hp? Remember there is a bit of a fulcrum effect on your wooden transom with the 4-12 inches of setback they have. There is a mini hydraulic jackplate on the interweb somewhere. Lightweight, but arou...

Re: Bullet

Aristocraft Typhoon (12 foot version) with a 20hp Suzuki 4 stroke short shaft did 38mph with a full grown adult in it. Its a slender boat, but 200 pounds. The bottom says it all. http://torontostar.newspaperdirect.com/epaper/iphone/homepage.aspx#_articlea90ae23a-d05d-4a07-90f3-b2f3fe3ff72d I know it...

Re: Mercury outboard complete rewire

Mine is about good as that one. See the patina/verdigris starting to appear on the wires? Good point though. I've found some good info within a little research and by luck stumbling upon some sites. This one is a really good troubleshooting site for CD/CDI system for outboards and outboard wiring sy...

Mercury outboard complete rewire

Anyone done this? I assume its a hellish task. This is the first place visited and posted on so bare with me. I checked out maxrules.com for the wiring diagram thats in color and matches the one in my Merc shop manual. So I got the colors. What are the gauges of wire I need? I also found a marine wi...

Aramid/Kevlar

This Spring/Summer I'll be laying some new glass down on the top of my boat and over the transom and maybe inside over the breasthook if I get good enough at it. I'm going to use 354 Aramid. I'm using it over glass because it handles force better. I'm over powering the Tuffy with a lighter 2 stroke,...

Re: Amphibious ATV

For a prop I would go for a composite prop since the blades are interchangeable if one were to hit some obstacle in the process.

Why do you only want to use 10hp?

Re: A runabout that can't plane???

It would be erie quiet with an electric motor. Yamaha has a 4 stroke marine engine thats only 1052cc. Its in some of their bikes, boats, PWCs and snowmobiles as well. It puts out 160hp and does so at about 10 000rpm. Its really light weight and it was used in Harbercraft/Jetcraft boats, the 1875 to ...

Re: 90 HP Mercury

Really at idle? I've ran stainless on various Merc gearcases and there isn't whining nor chatter of the gears. What size is your prop, you could be overloading your engine/gearcase. And what fluid are you using in the gear case? The manual you downloaded might have a prop chart using the variables -...

Re: 90 HP Mercury

First off is your tach set to the right position? It could be giving you a false reading overall. The metal on metal sound could be the flywheel scraping another component.... I'm not sure though. Have you ever ran the motor really lean before? Meaning the incorrect oil to gas ratio. I assume its 50...
