Re: Malahini or Roustabout? Bob in Poway, CA

Bob, I built Mahlahini and the guys are right. It's a smooth water boat. The roustabout would definitely be a better choice from a ride comfort perspective. When I build another, it's gonna be the roustabout for that very reason. The deep Vee will require more power but the ride will much more comfo...

Re: Bilge Drain into Splash Well?

WOW!! GDcarpenter. That's one good looking motor well. Jeff, I think most of the water coming into the boat was coming from the cracked bottom. Although there was a lot of water rolling over the transome into the motor well since the motor was too far in the water. I had major first boat issues. I t...

Re: Bilge Drain into Splash Well?

Since we're on the subject of motorwells, what's best for sealing the seams? Fiberglass resin fillet or caulking? The last time I use fiberglass fillet and it seemed to crack under the stress of the motor. I was thinking of using a flexible caulk. Is that a good idea? :?:

Ah, yes....Chatuge....We spent many summers on Chatuge. The water is so clear, it's like Perrier. You can see the white bubbles arround the prop....Not on inboards.

Re: Motor is lifted, skeg is straightened...now, how do I mount?

She'll get wet soon. I'm almost there. A jack plate might cause performance issues. I'd be interested to hear what a pro says. Removing the decking and doing it right will be expensive if you pay to have it done. Sounds like college tuition money to me. It's not that big of a deal, though. You can d...

Re: Motor is lifted, skeg is straightened...now, how do I mount?

Jeff, All,

Here are some pics of my motor well from my transome/bottom repair. The motor well bottom will be 3/8" plywood and it will fit into a dado cut in the 2x6 front. How's it look so far? any suggestions before i button her up?

Re: Motor is lifted, skeg is straightened...now, how do I mount?

Jeff, Don't want to scare you...but...take a look @ Roberta Hegy's post "Transome Alert" in Small Outboards. It's a sad and scary story of what can happen when the transome is not contructed correctly. It was a smaller boat (Zip) and the guy put too much motor on it (75hp). But the consequences are ...

Re: Wooden Boat Show, Mystic Conn.

My wife and I went last year. It's a blast! There's a 1800's whaling ship being rebuilt that you can go in and tour. They use the refit as a wood shipbuilding school. They do wood steaming classes, epoxie classes, fairing classes etc. The boats (all wooden) come in from all over and are amazing! Fro...

Re: Motor is lifted, skeg is straightened...now, how do I mount?

Jeff, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but that motor well, as it is, is not big enough for that big ol' ETEC 90. You'll have very little turning ability. The motor will hit the sides of the well before it gets fully rotated. The well needs to be widened. When you do that, you can incorporate al...

Oyster, I'll take some pics and post tonite. I bolted the smaller knees with 3/8" carriage bolts thru the bottom and up thru the battens and thru the transome. 4 each. I don't think it'll go anywhere.

Re: Motor is lifted, skeg is straightened...now, how do I mount?

I don't know for sure, Onplane. The first time I put her in the water we idled out past the no wake bouy and when i gunned it, it shot out of the hole like it was shot out of a gun. It came down hard and went back up and down two more times before I could throttle back. I think that's when the crack...

Re: Malahini with a tendency to porpoise

I did vupilot. I used aluminum wedges on my Mahlahini. They were 1" and worked well. But my motor was too far in the water (the cause of the porposing to begin with) so I ended up rebuilding the transome to the correct height. Hopefully that solved my problem. I won't know till I get on the lake.

I've been neglecting the forum too, Feckless. I had to paint my house. Anyway, what a great boat. I love the deck! I've never seen a deck like that. :D

Re: Motor is lifted, skeg is straightened...now, how do I mount?

Hi, Jeff! Getting that big 90 HP ETEC installed? Good for you. My 60 Yamaha is bolted on to a 2" transom. The only problem I had was due to mounting to far below the bottom of the boat. I couldn't get her trimmed out and had to rebuild the transome! :( I also put two smaller knees either side of the...

Re: Has anyone put a top on a Malahini?

Good looking boat Tim! Do you want a hard top to go with the wooden windshield? Or just a bimini? Bimini's are a lot cheaper, easier to put on and take off and they do the same thing without a lot of added weight. I know what you mean about the heat. We bake in our Mahlahini too. It's just an excuse...
