Thanks for your comments. I think I will continue to use a starter battery as the backup. Sounds like I will avoid any compatibility problems with that system. Only issue I have is I need to bring it home every once in a while to charge it up because I don't have access to power at the slip. Thanks ...

Back up Battery

Is there any issues with using a small 12 volt lawn tractor battery as a back up battery. I would plan to have it connected to the system using a switch (I.E. - off, Battery 1, Battery 2, both batteries). I am concerned that maybe over charging would be a problem. Thanks for the reply. I have a terrible time going to a lumberyard and getting wood for the boat because I'm never sure that I really got what I wanted or thought I was getting. Sheer material for Cabin Skiff

Does anyone have a suggestion of what wood to use for the sheers on a Cabin Skiff? They need to be about 17ft long and I'm not sure how to get them in that length. Do I need to scarf smaller lengths together? Also for the material, I do not have to bright finish them so is Douglas Fir a good choice ...
