Re: Mixing Brands of Epoxy

I got my fresh epoxy in (all Glen-L) and made putty to fillet both sides of the skeg yesterday. The right side hardened and the left was still mushy this morning so I scraped it off and made a new batch. I can't figure out why one side would harden and the other not when they were from the same batc...

Mixing Brands of Epoxy

So last weekend I ran out of Glen-L Resin but had a bit of slow hardener left. I also had a bit of West 105 resin left over but no hardener. So I mixed up a small batch at the 5:1 ratio of resin to hardener and used it to glass a small piece of scrap. It hardened up perfectly. I then used it to make...

Skegs Fiberglass or not?

Who fiberglass covers skegs and who just paints them?

Seems like fiberglassing would add abrasion resistance and some resistance to breaking.

What's the consensus?

Painting my Minimaxed

I'm almost to the finish line. The only step remaining is painting. Should I buy Easypoxy or Interlux topsides, another premium marine paint or go with a big box store paint? The boat will be left on the trailer covered when not in use. I'm thinking bright red with white trim (Cardinal and white). I...

Re: learning

You can buy nitrile gloves for $14/100 at Lowes. Little thin but cheap and workable. Latex is chemical and virus permeable; also potentiates allergies.

Help! air bubbles in epoxy

I'm frustrated. I'm almost done filling the weave on the fiberglass. The squeegee spread coat cured fine with no bubbles. The first two filling coats applied by roller set up fine. This last coat gets air bubbles in it no matter what I do. Same roller, same epoxy (Glen-L), same temperature, same hum...

Re: Resin Putty

2-3 volumes of filler to 1 volume of resin mixed with hardener to start. Continue to add filler until peanut butter consistency is reached.

I'm guessing 50% for first time builders less for more experienced builders

Re: Anything wrong with using heat lamps in cold weather

Talked to some friends at Dow Chemical in Freeport. Apparently heat curing epoxy increases cross-linking and this strength and makes it more waterproof. Surface shouldn't be too hot to leave your hand on it. Begins to soften and degrade at 350 degrees C. Shouldn't apply then heat since substrate may...

Re: New from Texas

Hi.

I'm also from Lubbock Texas. I've also lived in Arkansas, South Carolina and Al Bagdadi Iraq( for a year courtesy of the US Army). I'm building a Minimaxed and a Dynomite.

Be glad to talk at anytime.

Re: Resin Putty

Mix resin and hardener and stir well (as directed for the epoxy you are using). Add 2-3 volumes of filler (silica, wood flour, etc) until consistency of peanut butter.

Re: Reversing transom on squirt

The reason for the different transom angles lies with the way outboard motors mount and the thrust angle adjustments incorporated into the outboard design. They are made to handle either vertical transoms or the normal angle and allow for adjustment in angle so the boat gets on plane and rides level...

Re: Fiberglassing Minimaxed

I seem to be using way too much epoxy. I'm just to the point of laying down the first big piece of cloth and have used up most of the epoxy that came with the kit. I bought the stitch and glue kit and the fiberglass kit for Glen-L which was a total of 2.5 gallons of epoxy. I've got less than a gallo...
