Re: Lee's Monaco utility build
Lee, on my Monaco, I first attached a 12mm thick layer of plywood with silicon bronze nails into every frame member of the transom, than added an additional piece of 4mm on top of that. I covered the entire 12mm piece of ply with epoxy, then stapled the 4mm piece onto it with composite staples. Afte...

Your build is coming along very nicely, Carl! I will have to come over sometime to see it in person. Skip

Re: Somerset, KY Gentry
I, too, highly recommend the stapler. I used mine to fasten every piece of plywood to the hull. I used thousands of staples and had no problems. I just kept the stapler clean of any epoxy. I did not use the composite staples on the mahogany layer. Skip

Lee, I have attached a couple of photos of my transom. Maybe they will help you see what to do. Skip

Re: Building The Vera Cruise
Nice work, Carl. I was going to suggest you come over to use my jointer/planer (which you are always welcome to), but it would probably have taken longer for you to drive over than it took you to do it by hand. Nice job! Skip

Carl, as Jim mentioned, biscuits will be easier to use than dowels. I have a biscuit joiner if you want to borrow it. Skip

Re: 16' Ski Boat Restoration
Jim, so sorry this is giving you such a hard time. The only thing I can think of is that you are putting too much paint on the hull. You said you did a 7" wide area, but I think you also said that your roller is 7" wide. So are you just rolling one section the width of your roller? When I rolled min...

Re: 16' Ski Boat Restoration
Jim, yes I sanded between each coat. I waited at least a day between coats. I recommend a foam brush to tip it with because it has a sharp point on it, not a bunch of bristles to pick up the paint. Hold the bush vertical or nearly so to the surface you are tipping and tip it horizontally. I also had...

Re: 16' Ski Boat Restoration
I had good luck with the 2 part interlux paints. It is important to put it on very thin with the thin foam rollers. Only do a small section, say 2 or 3 feet wide. Follow that with light tipping with a foam brush, just using the very tip of the brush. Don't try to spread the paint with the foam brush...

Re: Lee's Monaco utility build
I used the PCM 343 engine in my Monaco. You will love it! I spaced my stringers 26" apart and the engine fit easily between them. I bought some heavy aluminum angle mounts and bolted them to the inside of the stringers for the front on the engine. I couldn't find an appropriate size aluminum angle f...

Re: Biss's Malahini Build
I stained my Monaco with the Interlux Chris Craft stains (check out my posts, "Making progress on my Monaco", page 34, I believe), followed by two coats of CPES (Smith's version). I only waited a few days for the stain to dry before I put on the CPES. I had absolutely no problem with it. It is as th...

Re: Tahoe 23 engine/transmission
I bought my engine from Discount Marine. They are good people. I didn't want the catalytic system with the single exhaust. I had to go through some hoops to purchase a non smog engine from them. They just needed a note stating that I was putting the engine in a old design boat so they could protect ...
