Yes, I see it and it looks just like mine. I feel better now. I think I'm good to go.

The keel is flat and level between the transom and frame 1. It was also level and flat between frames 1 and 2 until I epoxied and bolted the keel in place. The frames are straight, vertical, and level. I think Bill's explanation makes sense. "The frames define the boats shape at each station, n...

I'm thinking about using a 1x3 piece of mahogany, standing it on edge, and screwing it between frames 1 and 2 directly to the keel to straighten it out, forming a "T" shaped keel that will not bow as easily. I was just wondering if I'm overreacting to this, or if the bowed keel will cause ...

Squirt Keel

Here's a picture of my almost finished Squirt Frame. http://www.pachecano.net/squirt/squirtframe.jpg Here's the problem. When I bolted the keel to the stem, the keel bowed so that now, it's no longer a straight, level keel. See the picture with the gaps under each end of the level. http://www.pachec...

Actually, I drilled three small holes into the capped end of the PVC so that the pressure would not build up. The steam moistens the wood rather than drying it out so that’s not really a concern. And yes, the PVC pipe now has a pretty good bend in it as well. I had it up on saw horses during the ste...

Squirt Sheers

Here's an update. I bought a 10 foot piece of 4" PVC, capped the end, routed the hose from my garment steamer into the other end and stuffed a towel into it so the steam wouldn't escape. Thanks to BulldogBoater for that suggestion. I steamed two pieces of 5/8" x 1 1/4" mahogany for 45...

That's a great idea. I happen to have a garment steamer that I can use. Also, if I'm going to lamiante, do all of the laminations have to be made from a single length of wood? Is it okay to use two pieces on the straight part of the sheers (not the curved part)? Will this hold up over the long term?

They were completely wonky. But I was using some pretty wavy grained wood. I'm going to bite the bullet and build a steamer box and buy some white oak or spruce with a straght grain, if I can find it. I've wasted enough time and material to have taken the time to do it right in the first place. I gu...

Squirt Shears

I know this is an old problem that has been talked about here before. But I want to ask the question a different way. After breaking my 5th mahogany shear this weekend trying to bend it, I’ve decided that I’m doing something wrong. I’ve tried the old towels and boiling water trick, only to have the ...

Dave,

Thanks for the offer, but we're going to rent a car and drive. I want to see some sights while we're there and I hate being stuck without a vehicle.

Thanks again,
Rich.

My wife Alyson and I will be arriving late Friday night. After you take inventory, please let me know how I can help with beer, food, beer, supplies, beer, or whatever.

Still Room to Attend?

I'd like to attend the gathering event with my wife. How do I sign up to attend, bring stuff, volunteer to do stuff? I won't be bringing boat (just started a Squirt) because I have to fly to Nashville and drive to Guntersville. Is there stil time to sign up to help out?

Rich :x
