Re: New from Western NY

Welcome Aboard!! We were just up in 1000 Islands last month for the ACBS International Show. That place could certainly inspire the boat builder in anyone. Good luck with the Jet Squirt. Post pictures.

Re: Choice of wood filler color on okoume under west system epoxy

Sawdust from just about any wood mixed with epoxy gets really dark. Experiment, try lighter fillers, and staining prior to any coating will even things out.

Re: Frame construction

Look closely as there is most likely a floor timber. I may only be a line across the pattern. You would not just butt the parts to the stem.

Re: A couple new builder questions

When building a boat, you will need a table or space large enough to lay out the largest frame in order to properly assemble it. Use the patterns to draw the full size frame on it using transfer paper or use a pin to punch tiny holes in the shape of the frame. Then the framing can be aligned on the ...

Re: Frame construction

It means you should not make floor timbers in two halves. Also the upper part of the frame, called the deck beam, should also be made in one piece. The flatter bottom frame members should also be one piece. The forward, more "V'd" frame members need to be two pieces and joined with the floor timbers...

Re: Outrage progress

I like to use System 3 Quick Fair. Very handy for filling and contouring under finishes and fiberglass. It's in the Glen L catalog.

Re: Outrage progress

Planes do not work well on the edges of plywood due to the grain patterns. Planing against the grain is often bad. A pull saw or small tooth saw is better. Then touch it up with some block sanding.

Re: Outrage progress

Sorry, I used a belt sander. Use the chine line as a guide. Use caution so you don't sand too aggressively.

Re: Building the Zip with the NEW Zip Complete Wood Parts Kit

The decking is included. It is reversible so you can choose a smooth finish or routed caulk line pattern. Sections are finger jointed for a good fit.

Check the kit out in the Glen L store.

Re: Outrage progress

Looks great. I used a router with a trim bit. Run it along the top of the shear. Then plane and sand to the shape of the deck beams contour.

Re: Okoume vs Meranti for clear finishing

You're fine laminating Okoume or Merante over DF.

DF is fine for stems, breast hooks, and floor timbers.
