Re: New build

Barry, I’m a Johnson/Evinrude guy from way back. (BTW, the Merc short shafts are made by Tohatsu). It’s not all that big a deal to deal with a long shaft, in fact the first boat I built in ‘62 had a 20” transom. I haven’t decided what I’m going to do with power, either a current technology 40 or 50,...

Re: New build

Thanks, Bill. I think that this boat building thing is akin to some kind of mental illness- I need another boat like a hole in the head! That being said, I’m having a lot of fun doing it. Guess I need to figure out how to post some pics here again. I’m making quite a few changes from the original de...

New build

Hey, guys, it’s been a long while since I’ve been here. I’ve been on a Facebook wooden boats forum for a while, and a couple of weeks ago, a set of plans showed up for a PM-38, the first boat I ever built, from an article in the August, 1962 issue of Popular Mechanics magazine. The boat is very simi...

Re: HELP! what boat would suit a highschool student?

Long ago (and far, far away - 1961 in San Francisco, Ca, USA) I built a Tuffy. I did the frames in school wood shop, then finished the boat at home. It's a great little boat that runs great with a small engine (I had a 40 hp) seats 4, and is a great ski boat.

Re: I love the new design!!!!

I just cut out the transom and stem for a Stilletto, and I'm very seriously considering chucking it and starting a torpedo! What a gorgeous boat!

Re: Stiletto Build

Pamela, I'm just getting ready to start on a Stiletto - could you tell me what you did with the transom height - or maybe what you are going to use for an engine? I want to go "new tech" for power, and that means a 20" transom height. The plans say that the transom can be modified for a long shaft e...

Re: how important is power trim?

I'll second the Pirate's opinion - do the the power trim. I've been boating for 50 years (God, is that ever scary!) and admittidly I'm getting old and lazy, but I wouldn't have an engine without the trim capability. Yes, you can find a best trim on a manual trim engine, but you will run into situati...

Re: Starting a Squirt... ANY TIPS?

Warning!! The squirt's transom is 15" high. Long ago when the Squirt was designed, "short shaft" was 15", now it's 20", so a modern short shaft outboard can't be used on a Squirt. You will need to find an old (like from the '50's or '60's) outboard. Lot's of them around, and the tend to be "bulletpr...

Re: Jet Powered Squirt Video

All, Thanks for the kind words. Open heart surgery is not for the faint of heart! Take the worst thing that has ever happened to you, and multiply it by 5' and that will give a decent approximation of what it's like. Still, my life expectancy has gone from 17 weeks to 17 years, and every morning I w...

Re: Chastized for putting my Squirt on small outboard page.

Pamela,

I haven't been on the forum in a while, but saw your pictures and damn near cried. I'm pretty sure that most of your boat is fom my design, and that made me so proud and happy. Hpe you are as happy with your jet squirt as I am with mine.

Peace,

Mike, Again welcome to the forum. Lot's of good folks here, who have experienced at solved most whatever problems you may run into. The "Useful info and suppliers" section of the main Glen-l set lists one place in Sacramento, you might want to check them out. It's a bit of a drive for you, but I can...

Re: Jet Powered Squirt Video

Dave, If only you knew how much fun I've had! Although I didn't mention it at the tie, at the Gathering I just didn't feel quite right. When I got home I went to the doctor, and discovered that I had a major heart problem - I ended up with open heart surgery on 12/6 for replacement of my aortic hear...

Re: Input on Squirt

Charles, My boat is a jet with complete brightwork finish, so I'll echo what everybody else has said that there is a very wide range of the "how much of what" and "how you do it". I'm also longer than most at 11'-4", as the extra length is required for the jet, and lengthenig the boat (obviously) me...
