Re: G-10

Had a great time at G-10. Was nice to renew old acquaintances and meet some new people. Was especially cool meeting David, a fellow Baptist pastor, and his wife (David, please have her send me that dessert recipe. Thanks a million). A special thanks to Bill for all he does and also to Butch for givi...

Dinghy Adventure

The board index calls this "fishing stories", of which I have none; but it also says that boating adventures fit under this section. Looks like this is a new section and this may be the first adventure - but here goes. Those of you who were at the 2014 Gathering will remember me as the guy with the ...

Re: 2014 Gathering G-8

Thanks to all who made G8 possible and a special thanks to Ray Turner for lunch on Saturday - superb. It was a great time. Makes me regret not being at more of them, especially since it is so close. Thanks to Chris also for keeping a photo/video journal. Looking forward to the full album. Dale PS: I...

Re: Who's Coming?

Hey, Bill. I guess I'll always be the guy who had the car accident at the first gathering in Guntersville and didn't quite make it, though I did make it in 2008 with my little self-designed 8' dinghy. I'm hoping to stop by this year. I'm only an hour away in north GA. I plan to bring a boat just not...

12" sounds a little like overkill. I suppose there might be a time when that would be needed. Isn't the standard an 8:1 scarf? That would be 2" with 1/4" plywood.

Scarfing jig

I have never done any scarfing. Of the two builds that I have done that required longer than 8' pieces, I used butt blocks. They, of course, leave flat spots. I have seen various techniques and various jigs used to make the scarf joints. Some seemed better than others. I came across one the other da...

Re: Checking in and reporting a new build

Hi Dale. Beautiful sailboat. I really like the design and rigging. You did a wonderful job on it, the mast alone is a work of art. I never met you, my first Gathering was the 3rd one, but I had heard of your story about the traffic accident and it is nice to hear from you. Glad to see and hear that...

It is. Simple unstayed mast. No boom and hence no getting "boomed" in the head. I'm thinking about converting to a lug sail. (I'll let you do a little investigating on that one)

Checking in and reporting a new build

Greetings all. It has been a long time since I have posted, but I am not a complete stranger to at least a few of you. To jog your memories, I am the one who had the car accident at the entrance to the state park in Guntersville in 2007. I did make it to the Gathering there in 2008 with my little sa...

Just a word of thanks to all who put the 2008 Gathering together. I know events like that take a lot of work. Glad I was able to make it the whole way this year. I did make it home safe as well. It was great meeting a lot of boat builders and seeing a lot of great boats. Very inspirational.

Bill,
I know I signed up late, but I'd like to do my part. I should be there for supper Fri; breakfast Sat; and maybe lunch. What can I do to help with food, prep, etc? Don't want to be a freeloader. If nothing else, I'll pitch in some $'s and some labor.

Greetings all. Thought I would check in re the 2008 Gathering. Sorry I'm unable to read these pages and pages of posts. I'm thinking of coming down. I have an event that I have to be at on Saturday afternoon which means I would have to leave around 1:00 pm on Saturday but I thought I might come down...

Thanks for the reports and links to pics. Looks like I missed some mighty fine boats. I went down Monday to clean out my car. Decided to stop at the park. Absolutely beautiful. I drove up by the cabins and over to the ramp area. Top notch place. Here is link and pics of my car if interested: http://...

report on The Gathering

I'm the newbie here but I'm the first one back from the Gathering (sort of); so I'm going to take the liberty to report on the event (sort of) The reason I'm the first one back and reporting is because I didn't quite make it. I got right to the "threshold"; but not through the door. Here's the story...
