Re: Biss's Malahini Build

Looks great, will be a great performing combo of outboard and boat. Honestly I would start with the Mercury prop recommendation and go from there if it doesn't quite work. The gear ratio has a big effect on the torque at the prop, your RPM range and extra torque will mean a slightly higher pitch cou...

Re: Whitmore Lake Classic Boat Show

Looks like lots of fun! The black and white photo looks like a period promo shot for the sales brochure! Certainly should be framed and hung on the wall of Fame.

Re: Biss's Malahini Build

That prop size sounds about right for the boat/motor combo.

Re: The Fletchers Malahini

Wow, lots done! Looks great! About moving deck beams that form part of the frames, I don't recommend it because of structural concerns. The frame 1 deck beam supports the sides of the boat as well as the deck, the best way to do that structurally is to connect the tops of the frame 1 sides together ...

Re: Malahini performance

Nicely done! Per the Malahini plans the spray rails run full length to the transom but the bottom edge of the spray rails are flush with and same angle as the bottom for the aft third or 2/5 of the hull length. Meaning what you installed is just exactly what you needed :)

Re: Malahini from MD

Perfect! That's exactly Don Danenberg's method, glad it work out for you. If and when I get to assembling my Malahini kit I've made, I'll be doing a traditional planked deck and I expect to be using the same method :D

Re: Malahini from MD

So Don Danenberg the restoration wizard has a process like Jimbob's because he knows the old boats are rarely symetrical. Establish the centerline of your deck forward to aft on each frame using the stem center and the transom center for end points. Then lay the cover board pieces in place, making s...

Re: Design Comparison: shortened Key Largo or Miss Mist?

Great choice in the Miss Mist, sounds like it fits your wants and needs. It should be a bit easier to build in plywood versus cold molding. And don't worry if the windshield is not to your liking, you can put whatever you want to on your boat. That's the advantage and beauty of building your own boa...

Re: Design Comparison: shortened Key Largo or Miss Mist?

You might look at the Biscayne 18 too for a comparison since you are attracted to the 40s vintage hull style, though the split/dual cockpit is not. I do not recommend shortening the Key Largo, you'll create many issues, like fitting the engines (less space between the frames). A shortened version wi...

Re: Malahini from MD

Looks great. The 50s/60s vintage inboards often had vinyl upholstered ceiling panels like that. Mostly they were thin (1/8" or 3/16" thick) tempered hardboard or plywood with the layer of vinyl upholstery glued or stapled in place for looks, held in with retainer strips at the edges or chrome screws...
