Re: Plug For The Boat Building With Plywood Book

Totally agree with you Carl. I can't stress enough how important it is to the new builder, even those who already have the plans and instructions, the book fills in the blanks with What and Why and importantly the How. I worked as a lofter at a naval shipyard for a time as an apprentice, we used Rob...

Re: What the heck just happened aka did I just turn it all into kindling?

Not a problem, it's fixable. You got a little out of sequence, need to install the bottom battens and then do your fairing of the structure for the plywood. The battens give the hull bottom its shape between the frames. Install the bottom battens flush with the frame edges like the drawing shows, le...

Re: MI Malahini Build, Post Flip.

Old Mercs can be temperamental and sometimes damn uncooperative. I have the Mercury manual and some of the tools and love tinkering with them as a hobby so I'll be good with one on my Malahini. But they're not for everyone. Great choice with the 60 4 stroke, you'll not regret the extra outlay for it.

Re: Power for a malahini

A 60 hp for sure. A 40 is not likely to be enough with a normal load of people and gear. It'll probably plane out but will be slower accelerating and working harder.

Re: MI Malahini Build, Post Flip.

What's the engine doing? I might be able to help, I have the 1965 version of your engine. I got it purring beautifully after I went through it with a cleaning and a tune-up. Mine has the old style magneto ignition with points which can be a bother to set the gap properly. Typically the finicky parts...

Re: The Fletchers Malahini

Looks great! And a great choice for power, you'll be happy with it. I saw a Malahini at this year's Woodenboat Show in Mystic CT and it had an Evinrude 60 which the owner said is a great match to the boat.

Re: MI Malahini Build, Post Flip.

What a great looking boat! Congratulations! Watch for restrictions in your fuel lines, check they are not affected by the gas. Some lines will soften and delaminate with today's gas. I'm sure the guy who redid your motor test ran it and adjusted the carbs but double check with him? The carbs are adj...

Re: field Boards

That is exactly right, in that the edges of the field boards will tend to open up in the middle when laying them into place especially against the traditional center king plank. Keep the deck field boards parallel to each other. You can back bevel the edges if needed to keep them tight. You have to ...

Re: Malahini from MD

You might try pieces plastic packing tape on the underside of the holes to keep the seam epoxy from dripping through, then peel them off after it sets up. That way no mess and the holes themselves are filled flush with the underside.
