malahini hull fairing difficulties

I am trying to get my hull adequately faired prior to veneering with 1/8 inch sapele. Unfortunately, I have already epoxied on my first row of veneer. I am starting at the sheer line and plan on working up (technically down, but the hull is upside down of course). I noticed my fairing issues after t...

question re finish

A question for those who have veneered and finished bright. Is it reasonable to assume that extra coats of epoxy can be used to build up minor flat spots in the veneer? I was planning on 3 coats of epoxy prior to the 2 part poly but, in some places, some extra coats might optimize "fairness'. Everyt...

Re: Matt's Geronimo

Well done Matt! Many of my family's sweetest memories center around our time on the boat together. I know it is special to be out in a boat that you crafted with your own hands. I have enjoyed following your build. Great work and perseverance! Bob

Re: veneer reveals hull flat spot

IMG_1808.JPG This picture shows my veneer clamping technique. Milhouse, love the oscillating tool idea. What blade would you recommend? Jim and Jim, thanks for the advice. I hadn't even considered the trim router idea. That may well be the cleanest way to get that strake off. The flat spot is about...

veneer reveals hull flat spot

boat.jpg Not sure if I got picture to come through and my problem is difficult to discern in 2 dimensions, but, I have identified a significant flat spot on my hull that I didn't notice until I had epoxied on the second row of veneer, newbie mistake. I think it is probably due to my plywood butt-bl...

Re: Bob's Geronimo - launch

Oh yeah, I almost forgot to give you my formula for trimming. When I start from a stop or idle speed, I trim the motor all the way down. As soon as I get up on plane, I look over my shoulder and trim the motor up until the top of the motor cowling is parallel to the water's surface. If I change my s...

Re: Bob's Geronimo - launch

Well done Bob! Beautiful boat! I would definitely reassess ride when not at maximum capacity. I think you will be fine. I know you will enjoy getting out on the water!

Re: Bob's Geronimo - launch tomorrow

Bob, We have been launching our 18 foot bow-rider for 26 years and the same checklist has served us well all those years. 1. Is the drain plug in? 2. Are the trailer lights unplugged? 3. Are the safety straps removed? 4. Is the safety chain unhooked from the bow eye? 5. Is the motor off the crutch? ...

Great lumber resource

For South Carolina and, perhaps, southeastern builders, I have identified a great source of boat building lumber. Tom Timm at Custom Woodcrafter in Summerville, SC just milled all of my sapele veneer for my Malahini. My frame sapele was ordered from LL Johnson and I had it shipped a few years ago wh...

Malahini veneer

Since beginning my build, I have been pondering options for attaching my veneer. I would love to minimize staples and I have no experience or equipment to vacuum bag. I will be using 1/8 inch sapele for the sides. If I veneer the sides before I attach the bottom plywood planking, I can use home-made...

Pre and post pics very helpful. Love your finish. What dye/stain did you use under your epoxy?

Re: spiling question

On the main Glen-L web page, Ken Hankinson has an article about planking mahogany runabouts. He mentions that you can bevel or undercut the plank edge for a tighter jam fit. Any thoughts on the best way to do this?

Re: MalahinI transom knee height

The full size pattern for the Malahini knee is well short of the height needed for a long shaft motor. I went to my friends boat dealership and took quite a few measurements on the bolt hole patterns to make sure my knee would have adequate height. I had to add at least 3 inches to make sure the bot...
