Re: Buick aluminum 215 V8

Wow, it's been two years already… still no progress on finding space for a boat, and I'm deeper into bikes now than I was then, so the manifolds and bellhousing are for sale. They're listed on ebay but are local pick up only.

Re: Looking for some guidance on emission products....

No one seems to be jumping in so I'll make a few comments on what little I know. I've worked for exhaust suppliers for 25+ years but I've mainly worked on gas engines. My one experience with DPFs has been in the locomotive world, though some of the guys I work with use them regularly. (I'm a develop...

Re: Inboard vs outboard

Engines run best at 82 to 87 degrees. (500cc gp bikes run under 70 deg c as a safety factor to prevent scalding of riders in accidents!) Really? it seems strange that they would be worried about scalding coolant when they don't bother taking any precautions against fires. http://db.carbuzz.com/imag...

Re: Buick aluminum 215 V8

The ski king is on hold right now, I've come to the realization that my current shop just isn't big enough to build it. I'm not going to get rid of the engine yet though. In any case, the engine and manifolds/bellhousing/waterpump will stay together even if I do decide to sell it.

Re: Adapting an engine to a trans

I don't think exhaust is really that big of a deal though. For one thing, you don't have to have water-cooled exhaust. Wrapping the manifold and pipes with heat tape will keep the heat down, and the water can just go overboard. That said, one builder has used a Jag V-12 and managed to build a water...

Re: Construction of barrel back on Ski King

Hi Jan,

What you're talking about is a curved transom, not a barrel back. The Glen-L book on building plywood boats has some details on doing this.

Re: My top ten

Those teak tomato stacks should last a long time. I just found some of my marine ply is the fireplace. I was saving it for cabinet work. Bill I've not had wood disappear but when I got out of college and moved away I had some stuff stored at my parent's house. My dad was a metal shop teacher...

Re: Bandido design changes/modifications?

Bill, I imagine the physical weight wouldn’t matter as much as the buoyancy? Meaning that the wood version might be heavier on the trailer, but lighter in the water? Maybe I'm not understanding what you're saying, but if it's heavier on the trailer, it's heavier in the water too. The hull displaces...

Re: Building The Vera Cruise

Hi Mate, You could always try and replicate the cast metal parts with fiberglass/wood and get them chrome plated. Cheers Mojo EDIT: Nevermind, apparently there are places that can "plate" fiberglass. It's not cheap though... My guess is by the time you put the time/effort/money into building the pa...

Re: Weight And balance

One final question. IN the attached picture, I've circles in red an 18 foot dimension which I am unsure of. The boat is 21 feet overall. Does anyone have any idea what this represents? Is it the approximate balance point of the boat? Capture.JPG I'm guessing that's the length of the boat at the wat...

Re: Weight And balance

So the question would be, would I add a compensating weight forward for the entire engine or only the difference from it being added in some location other than the designed location (i.e two feet further aft than designed). As you can see I would need to know what the original engine weight was in...

Re: Weight And balance

CB is center of Bouyancy, not balance. Center of Bouyancy is determined by the shape of the hull and the way it displaces water. Center of balance, which I'm going to call center of mass, is determined by the distribution of weight. The CB will always be in line with the center of mass but they are ...

Re: Buick aluminum 215 V8

Graig, nice engine. I wish they were easier to find over here. (Europe-small engines... ) Any idea about the weight? Joris Landrover v8 is the same basic casting, but marinising??? Would the buick parts fit? Landrover v8 are pretty decently priced since most people do a diesel upgrade becaus...
