Chain Plates Location

Building a Glen-L 14 and it looks like the chain plates are attached to the coaming. Is this the best or are there any other ideas? Thank you.

Re: Deck Design

Thanks Bill. I was hoping that there was flexible plastic the size and width of the strip, then only had to cut to length. I am going to stick to my original plan of using tape. Thanks again.

Deck Design

I have to ask a kind of dumb question: What is the material between deck planks? It looks like some kind of caulking. I follow Joshua Burke on YouTube building a Zip. He used colored epoxy which looks like a lot of work. By the way I am building a Glen-L 14 sail boat.

Hull Coating

First time boat builder, and I am in the process of epoxy coating the hull on my Glen-L 14' sailboat. I installed the fiberglass cloth and have applied 4 total coat of epoxy. My question is that the cloth fiber should be covered by now or has it taken other several more coats? I use West System epox...

Round over chines

I was watching an YouTube video of a stitch & glue 14ft sailboat and they rounded over the chine and the transom. Is there an advantage to this other than making the hull easier to fiberglass?

Re: Wood filler

Are you using epoxy to join your pieces? West System epoxy has many fillers to add to thicken and fill the gaps. That's my plan with my Glenn-L 14' sailboat.

Re: scarf joint for chine and sheer

I could only find 8' material so I needed 2 scarfs. My chine calls for a 2" wide piece so I cut 4 1" wide by 8' long pieces and used biscuits and epoxy to join them and staggered the scarfs so they did not line up. Not sure how well this will work but we will see. Also I drilled a 3/16" hole across ...

Laminated Chines and sheers.

First time boat builder here building a Glen-L 14. Looking ahead to installing the 1 x 2 chine and is there any trick to bending that material? It seems stiff. Also has anyone laminated a chine using three 1/4" thick pieces of mahogany or plywood? It's more work but seems easier. Also I forgot to me...

Centerboard Trunk Construction.

The plans for my Glen-L 14 sailboat centerboard trunk calls for 1" spacer between the sides of the trunk. With a 3/4" centerboard that would leave you with 1/8" on each side for clearance. My question is if you fiberglass the inside of the trunk and the centerboard will all your clearance be taken u...

Deck ideas

I'm building a Glen-L 14 sloop and looking for ideas for deck designs and materials. I plan on painting the hull but want to make the deck stand out with a wow factor. I also need instructions on how build this deck.

Electric Hand Planner

I also have a question about electric hand planners. Has anyone used them for fairing chines and sheers or are they to agressive?

I did not realize that you flip the boat AND the form at the same time. Thanks for your comments.

Re: Building Form Height

Thanks Neil. I was thinking if the keel was too high to work on, I would build a build a platform to work off of. I posted the question wondering if there was a big negative to building a higher form that I did not think of.
