Re: Project JetSquirt!
Funny you should ask that. On Sunday I went to pick up the ski that I thought I was going to use but upon inspection I found a broken block, so I'm back to looking for something. Since I don't have anything yet, I haven't really planned on how I'm cutting the hull or how I'm going to mount the motor...

Re: Project JetSquirt!
Yes, two 18" x boat length + a foot for the sides and two 24" x boat length + a foot for the bottom. You can actually get away with adding 6 inches to the boat length, but I like the extra margin of error and it gives a little more leverage when bending in the bow area as it meets the stem. Also, I ...

Re: Michigan Squirt Build
I did a little bit of rough fairing with a power plane, but they are just a little too unforgiving for me to do anything more. I did most of my fairing with a jack plane and spoke shave. The spoke shave gets into tight places and it is easier to reference the working plane with the long handles and ...

Re: Project JetSquirt!
Hi Jimmy Initially I left the battens long but then ended up cutting them back close to F2. Once I laid ply on them I realized there was no way. Scarfing plywood. I made a large router base and used a 1.5" cutter I have. I should have gone with a new one, but it did a decent job. i didn't use clamps...

Re: Project JetSquirt!
I screwed into the frames on the sides, so I'm going to have to figure out what to do about that. I don't it's really a problem, but I may try to add some reinforcement in those areas.

Re: Project JetSquirt!
I guess I haven't posted an update in a while. I spend any free time I have working on projects and not so much documenting them. I ran out of epoxy today and so I'm on hold for a bit until I put together an order this week. Photo Oct 29, 7 56 27 PM.jpg Photo Oct 29, 7 56 51 PM.jpg Photo Oct 29, 7 5...

Re: Michigan Squirt Build
Mike,
Where did you get the 3 and 4 inch measurements? I don't see anything in the plans other than 2" nail spacing. Is that from a book?

Re: Michigan Squirt Build
I think I see where I went wrong. It shows "decking" being fastened to "all members" with 1-1/4" nails, but "planking" with 1" and 1-1/4" nails to everything except for the frames. I guess I confused "planking" with "decking".

Re: Michigan Squirt Build
Well, I don't have the fastening schedule in front of me, but I believe it says 1-1/4" nails spaced 2" "in every member" or something to that effect. I took that to mean frame member. 1-1/4" wouldn't really work in anything other than the frames. I also agree that 1" is right on the verge of being t...

Re: Michigan Squirt Build
I've decided to go with screws with the same 2" spacing. 3/4" into chines, battens, and sheers. 1-1/4" into the frames, transom, and stem.

Re: Michigan Squirt Build
Yep, I'm way off. I think the joints at F2 have to be angled much differently than on the plans to be able to make a junction there.

Re: Michigan Squirt Build
I wondered the same thing, but making sure my breasthook was at the right height above the floor helped. After that it still seemed like they were about 2 inches away from the breasthook. I pulled mine down (up?) a little so it was 3 inches away. Any further and the joint at F2 starts to act a littl...

Re: Michigan Squirt Build
Mine lined up the same and led to a bit of confusion and adjusting of the stem/breasthook up and down. In the end it is about 3/8" of a bend at the end of the keel. I don't have any good pictures with the keel in place, but I also tapered the keel between frame 1 and the stem so bending the keel is ...

That makes more sense. If you zoom in they kind of look like shoelaces.slug wrote:Think that may be tape that he stapled through.

Re: cracker box - is born
I'm going to guess by the weatherstripping looking white stuff around the sheers that you vacuum pressed the mahogany to the ply? Do you have any pictures or details of that?
