Re: Travels and Adventures of "Curt's Dream" a True Grit design-The Great Loop

Also in the museum, there was a model of the Sombrero Key lighthouse that is located offshore of Vaca Key in Marathon. IMG_20200212_170713.jpg From the top of the lighthouse, we could see back to the docks at the North end of Duval Street where a Disney cruise ship was docked. Key west is popular st...

Re: Travels and Adventures of "Curt's Dream" a True Grit design-The Great Loop

There was a museum at the lighthouse with the history of the lighthouse and displays. This museum was in the light house keepers old residence house. IMG_20200212_170556.jpg The lighthouse was open to climb the 88 steps to the top so Joe and I climbed to the top while the girls took pictures from be...

Capt. Tony's Saloon has one dollar bills hanging from the walls and ceiling. It was at this bar where Jimmy Buffett mastered his Key West sound. Re: Travels and Adventures of "Curt's Dream" a True Grit design-The Great Loop

We went back to Key West on Wednesday to look at a few things that we had missed on the previous trips. With the bus fare only $1.00 each for the bus trip to Key West, the only downside for using the bus is that it takes 1 1/2 hrs. for the 50 mile trip. The manatee was back at the boat again when we...

Re: Travels and Adventures of "Curt's Dream" a True Grit design-The Great Loop

Bill Yes, we saw the urinal outside. His wife had decorated the outside of it so her friends maybe wouldn't figure out what it actually was. There was also a penny in the cement by the pool. The story of the penny is Mrs. Hemingway spent $20,000+ having the pool installed when he was gone and when h...

Re: Travels and Adventures of "Curt's Dream" a True Grit design-The Great Loop

After leaving the Hemingway home, we walked through a residential area to a monument of the most Southern point in the US. IMG_20200206_111508.jpg IMG_20200206_162743.jpg At this point our feet were starting to get tired, so we decided to call it a day and catch the bus back to the boat. We plan to ...

Re: Travels and Adventures of "Curt's Dream" a True Grit design-The Great Loop

We walked a few blocks from downtown to Ernest Hemingway's home. He lived here until his death in 1961. IMG_20200206_154717.jpg Descendants of Hemingway's 6 toed cats still prowl the grounds and we were greeted by one at the ticket booth. IMG_20200206_160322.jpg There are some 50 cats living on the ...

Re: Travels and Adventures of "Curt's Dream" a True Grit design-The Great Loop

We took the city bus back to Key West again but caught the 8:00 AM bus this time to look around town. The road to Key West was actually an old railroad bed and the road used a lot of the railroad bridges. There is one bridge that is seven miles long just West of Marathon on the way to Key West. Back...

Re: Head Placement

Baron Ray built his True Grit with a composting head and was a mentor when I was building my True Grit. His is 27' while mine is 30' so we both have a lot more room to work with than what you are looking at building. Ray has his head in a smaller space with a shower located in a separate space. No m...

Re: Head Placement

Baron: I put a composing head in my True Grit and have been 100% happy with the results. We are currently on the Great Loop and use the composing head multiple times a day with NO odors in the boat. The unit is totally self contained and even looks nice. See my separate thread on our Great Loop trip...

Re: Travels and Adventures of "Curt's Dream" a True Grit design-The Great Loop

We returned to the ferry boat at 2:30 PM for the trip back to Key West. The winds and seas had died down during our stay at Fort Jefferson so the ride back to Key West was a lot smoother with no one getting sea sick. IMG_20200202_150406.jpg IMG_20200202_121516.jpg We still had an 1 1/2 hour ride on ...

In recent years, the Fort and island has been used by Cuban migrants to gain access to the United States, Under a policy started in 1995, Cuban migrants could legally stay and pursue citizenship in the US if they could get one "dry foot" on US soil. Re: Travels and Adventures of "Curt's Dream" a True Grit design-The Great Loop

Fort Jefferson was used to house war prisoners during the civil war. Dr. Samuel Mudd was probably the most famous prisoner ever housed at the Fort. He was the man that set the broken leg of John Wilkes Booth, Abraham Lincoln's assassin. Dr Mudd was sentenced in 1865 to life in prison at Fort Jeffers...
