Re: Trasom Drains: Yea or Nay?

Building a key largo, but I have a fiberglass power boat. It has a garboard drain plug right in the center of the transom. When I get back from a day on the water, I hose down the inside of the boat, crank the trailer angle as high as it will go and take out the plug. I get the salt rinsed out and d...

Re: 20ft Texas Barrel

I found a good tip on "breaking down plywood" on the Woodsmith shop tv program (PBS). Buy a piece of 1" or 2" foam insulation (4X8), lay it on the ground and place the plywood sheet on top of the foam. Use your circular saw to make any manageable sizes of plywood you need. Set the blade so the saw j...

Thank you. As I am sure the "veterans" of the forum know...this forum is fantastic! Like most of you, I start to ruminate over an upcoming build challenge several weeks out...sometimes I come up with a great solution...sometimes I don't! Having the forum is an amazing security blanket as there is no...

Re: Key Largo build Charleston SC by mickffly

I am getting close enough to side planking that I am investigating lumber sources. A few questions: Can someone give me an estimate as to how many board feet of lumber (mahogany, sapele) it will take to plank the sides (20 foot Key largo)? ...I know that I can resaw 1/8 inch for final application, b...

Key Largo build Charleston SC by mickffly

I am planking my Key Largo hull bottom. I am nearly finished with the third (of four) layers of 4mm okume. I see some builders lay the 4th layer longitudinally, instead of putting the final layer on the 45 degree bias. Does it matter? The entire bottom will be covered with fiberglass and epoxy...and...

Key Largo by mickffly

I am planking my key largo. As I get to the bow, I am finding it hard (impossible) to get the edges aligned. Some I can take down with a spoke shave, others are decidedly separated. I tried using skinnier planks, more fairing, shimming battens, and it helped, but still have some issues. Planning to ...

Re: Key Largo cold mold question

Excellent replies...thanks. Yes, I have 4 mm Okume... so my 3/8 staples won't break through on the third layer! It's good to know that I shouldn't worry about putting staples in the "field" and will do so to enhance the lamination. I have 3/8 staples, but maybe I should buy some 1/4 to avoid punch t...

Key Largo cold mold question

I have the first layer of 1/8 okume on the bottom of my Key Largo build. I'm using the Raptor stapler with nylon staples...and using more than I thought I would need (~4 staples across a 5" plank and ~5 across an 8"). Seems like I have a solid bond between planking and longitudinals...so my question...

Re: fairing the stem of key largo

Thanks to you both! It's one of those questions about boat building...you think you know the answer to...but don't want to make a dumb mistake.
I appreciate the help.

fairing the stem of key largo

When I look at online photos, it's hard to see exactly how to fair the stem. The stem near the breasthook, where the side battens meet, appear to be 45 degree angle. Near frame seven, it's a deep angle almost touching the frame notch. Where I am having trouble is the in between, but still above (the...

Re: Key Largo Transom

Thanks. The transom mounts vertically, at 90 degree to the build platform. Your drawing helps show a potential problem...if the keel and decking are coming in flat, but if the first two frames are higher elevation than the transom, the 12 degrees might be needed?

Key Largo Transom

I have studied the plans for my Key Largo Transom. The full size plan says the bottom of the transom (keel side) is to be "flat and horizontal." On the frame drawings it says the transom is to be cut at 12 degrees "all around" My instinct is to cut the curved part 12 degrees and leave the bottom fla...

Sapele vs mahogany

Building a barrel back 19. It appears that I can't easily get mahogany, but can get sapele. Is sapele okay as an alternative for the frames?

Re: Glen L 15 motorboat

I have a long shaft tohatsu 4 hp. It's funny, all these years I have had gps capability and I never checked my speed!
Of course, mine is rigged as a sailboat so speed is not usually a concern.

Re: Glen L 15 motorboat

I have a Glen-L 15 with a 4 hp. It is my understanding that the 15 is a displacement hull...the merry maid in the photo spears to be on plane. I can't imagine a 20 hp being able to push my 15 out of its wave! However, I am not an expert.
