Re: Malahini Progress on Long Island, NY

You might be right and I'll watch to see how it holds up over time. I would like to find an enamel of the phantom black for future work. For now it seems fine. I do know that laquer over enamel rapidly acts as paint remover. I believe you are correct. I've not had a problem with urethanes ov...

Re: About ready to start my Malahini...

Next "setback"... Seems I can't remember where I put my "Frames #2 and #4 patterns!! I have everything else! Awhile back I attempted to copy my set of blueprints. I did this because my "Zip" and "Squirt" patterns are faded to the point of being un-readable. Anyway,...

Re: About ready to start my Malahini...

Thanks for the feedback. Funny, "the book" doesn't mention sapele... a quick "google" of it, seems to show that it's not really "mahogany" per se, but a good subsitute?? The bin (rack) that the wood was sitting in is labled "Sapele Mahogany 4/4". Oh well... at...

Re: About ready to start my Malahini...

Ugh... re-reading my last post. I should make more clear... I selected and purchased the sapele mahogany instead of the white oak. The price difference was only slight. Figured the sapele would be lighter, easier on the tools, and just plain gorgeous... still hoping I did the right thing. Thanks for...

Re: About ready to start my Malahini...

Well... One step backwards, and two forward. Progress right? Here's my story: I bought some white oak to start my frames because of it's strength... ok... because it was cheaper  ! Before I started cutting it up, I thought I'd re-read some of my "Boatbuilding With Plywood" book. I qu...

Re: Where to start...

"So cool" is right Ian! Sounds pretty good. You must be quite excited! So nice to see that your family is "onboard" with O.B.R.! Cherish that.

Re: About ready to start my Malahini...

Yep, 3/4" is fine. Most of the pieces I got were true 4/4 with one straight edge. I cut most of it with my jig saw and sanded back to the line with a bench top sander. If you stuff is not too rough just run a random orbital over it to smooth it out a bit to encapsulate. The 8/4 material I got ...

Re: About ready to start my Malahini...

Great to hear you've started the journey! Well... Sorta  . I bought some 4/4 white oak, and thought that I'd just use my buddy's thickness planer to mill it and try to save some cash. Turns out that his planer is not really up to snuff, and that the white oak would probably put it on it's kne...

Re: About ready to start my Malahini...

Excellent advice from you both! I've always been a stickler for trying not to sit too high. I like to feel "in the boat" and not "on it", at the same time keeping legroom in mind. I really like the look and feel of a "double cockpit", so will aim for that. I wont be pla...

Re: About ready to start my Malahini...

Greetings Roberta... beautiful work on your Zip! Thanks for the template (or lack of) advice. Was also wondering where onplane was. His build was coming along so nicely! Life does get in the way from time to time... Im hoping to see him back.

Re: Where to start...

Whoops... realised that I was commenting on Bill's picture (nice job Bill  ). But my "inspiration comment" certainly stands with regard to your build as well as others here. I'm sure your engine looks fine, and not much that we're doing is irreversible, if you're not happy with it &q...
