Re: KIDS BUILD A BOAT EVENT IN HOUSTON

Moving in on this Monday, and again on Wednesday. Three finished home built boats, one Squirt under construction, one 1960 16' Wood Cruiser's Inc., 8' pram for the Kids to build during the show, and 11 antique outboards. Club will have 10 plus boats and about 50 outboards on display at entry to show...

Re: Motor Weight?

Check the weight of the battery! Could be 40 plus pounds, a lawn mower battery is much lighter, I use one on my 2006 25 Merc 4 stroke (165#).

Also putting battery forward will be better, actually a battery forward will offset the extra weight on back.

Re: Motor Weight?

I have not build the Tunnel Mite, but have a lot of experience. You are not only 35 pounds over weight but 35 percent over the allowable limit. I can tell you weight distribution, is most important on any boat especially the smaller ones such as the Tunnel Mite. A lot depends on your skill level and...

Re: KIDS BUILD A BOAT EVENT

4 boats.JPG 4 boats.JPG Built these 3 plus the one in garage behind me in 6 weeks, last year at this time, for the Kid Build A Boat booth at the Houston Boat Show. Sad part is maybe 1 in 3 will ever see the water, maybe sand boxes? Each kid that helps build, gets a free chance to win the boat, and ...

Re: Helping 7 year old grandson build "Squirt" in Houston

Jimmy Please point out anything you see or things to look out for. This is my first Squirt and every boat is different, wish I had the time to build at your level, but not in the cards right now. Most of the boats on this site including yours are master pieces! Hoping to meet up with you some day, m...

Re: Helping 7 year old grandson build "Squirt" in Houston

Jimmy Thanks for the heads up on frame 1, I did realize that after it was complete and will replace. Please let me know if you see something I did wrong or would make construction easier or better. I know most of the mistakes to make on the other 2 boats I build with the kids, so I go only forward f...

Re: Helping 7 year old grandson build "Squirt" in Houston

Grandson's first test ride! I have found it is so important for the kid to see their accomplishments! driving in back yard t and rib 1.JPG Now that rib 1 and transom are very rough assembled, I had grandson load rib1 and transom in my boat to take across the lake to my shop for fine finishing, the n...

Re: Helping 7 year old grandson build "Squirt" in Houston

Grandson was not bored today, had him rough layout his precut frame 1 and transom on plan and screw together with a minimum number of sheet rock screws. Predrilling and screwing is a job he can almost do himself, with 20% supervision, he gets better with each screw! He is just learning to put his we...

Re: transom

IF I am reading this correctly, you are saying the transom is at a 90 degree angle to the bottom, vertical? It should be 12 degrees up to 15 degrees off vertical to allow trimming the outboard down to prevent porpoising.

Re: Helping 7 year old grandson build "Squirt" in Houston

Helped grandson layout transom today, then I rough cut it out for him. Next will be rough assembly. Hope to rough assemble both frames at same time, but his attention span is about 45 min max! His job today was laying out lines on wood, moving wood around, adjusting table saw blade height and rip fe...

Re: Geronimo and her Chieftain

Looks like you have hole for mount in dash, why not install unit and see where the cable needs to go? Probably you will not need to drill any holes other than helm in the dash and hole in motor well, if built. These cable are very stiff could be difficult if not impossible to thread thru any holes i...

Are you using old style cable steering with pulleys or newer push pull cable steering?
