Re: First Boat Build:White Oak v Dense Yellow Pine

Glued the first frames today once I got home and while those are drying I am starting to plan out the transom. I am torn between the short shaft (15") and long shaft (20"). I have been doing a little research and it seems the long shaft would be better in terms of options for motors in my area. I'm ...

Re: First Boat Build:White Oak v Dense Yellow Pine

Been a while since I had the chance to post, but just wanted to update. Have cut the frame members and sanded them using a stationary sander and starting to cut gussets. Order the fastening kit this past weekend and enough epoxy to start assembly. I've read up on the gusset fastening and it's still ...

Re: First Boat Build:White Oak v Dense Yellow Pine

Ryan, That's the boat I'm lookin to build! So here's my game plan: To spread out costs of materials, I am beginning the process acquiring lumber and epoxy as I go. I know this may be a poor planning idea, but it's the only way I can begin my project without waiting 8 months until the wife finishes s...

Re: First Boat Build:White Oak v Dense Yellow Pine

This is awesome. I appreciate all the information, definitely what I needed to see. I am beginning to gather my tools and supplies. I will definitely fiberglass and use a high quality paint, as I plan on using this boat to reach those hard places.

Re: First Boat Build:White Oak v Dense Yellow Pine

So I'm tryin to figure out my bill of materials before I start this and was wondering about the epoxy. Which epoxy did you go with and did you fiberglass the seams or simply encapsulate?

Re: First Boat Build:White Oak v Dense Yellow Pine

Hey yall, this reply is my first post on the forum, I made an account when I saw this post because I built a Honker in 2008. Let me rephrase that. I finished building a Honker in 2008. That's not right either. I got a dozen things I still want to change/improve. Anyway, JCD, not sure your reasons f...

Re: First Boat Build:White Oak v Dense Yellow Pine

Awesome advice all. It sounds like the pine will be the path to go on with some epoxy work. Dave, on the wife note, I greatly appreciate the wisdom you have to pass on and was not offended at all by the comment.I am very blessed to have a wife who supports everything I do and I meant the comment wit...

Re: First Boat Build:White Oak v Dense Yellow Pine

Thanks for the warm welcome and advice! I am mostly likely going with the yellow pine for cost reasons as a first build. On another note, is is possible to use two pieces of glued/fastened 1" boards in place of the 2" boards the plans call for? I know the wood glue of today often is stronger than th...

First Boat Build:White Oak v Dense Yellow Pine

Good afternoon all, I am working on my first boat build, the 15' Honker and am looking primarily at two lumber types for framing. I have found a supplier in North Georgia with both dense yellow pine and white oak, each kiln dried. The yellow pine is around a dollar and a half cheaper per BF. A coupl...

Hello, new member here in Georgia. I bought plans to build the Honker model, to fulfill the need for a duck hunting boat rather than my two kayaks. Will do a first build and go from there to more boats. I'm sure I will have many questions along the way.
