Re: FF in Kathleen GA

Well a short notice deployment has kept me from starting this project, but the lumber is ready when I am. I've still got a couple months left. should be starting around Christmas time.

Just placed the lumber order tonight, but I'm deploying again in May and TDY a couple times between. Hopefully I can get some done between times away.

Re: Flats Flyer Build in Orlando

Did you ever think of building the boat form on casters? Do you think this would give way to level issues? I'm only thinking of it for moving it in and out of the garage as needed for other woodworking projects.

Re: Flats Flyer Build in S.C.

Thought I would start a thread of my build... Like the rest of the country ..It will only stay warm here for one or two days ... then it turns cold.. but have gotten three frames built.. I started with #4 (that wood was on top) now I have the middle frames built .. I think ..I will add rod storage ...

Well, ive about got the garage ready for the boat. Cleaned it out this weekend, epoxyed, clear coated the floors, and painted the walls. Wont be long until I can start on this beast.

Re: Flats Flyer Build in S.C.

Kelly,

I have to ask. Before the outboard, what was your final bottom line build cost? Also, did you stick with the screws on the site? Did you go rebel and use a different type?

Re: Flats Flyer Build in Orlando

Tracy,

I meant to ask. Is there a point to purchasing the screw kit? With modern technology, why not just use exterior screws? Seems REDICULOUSLY steep for just the screws.

Re: Flats Flyer Build in Orlando

Thanks, I'll look into the book. I'm always down for adding more books to my woodworking collection. Morris Farms Cypress Sawmill is right up the road, so I am going to try to stick with cyprus for the frame. I was thinking of basically matching the most common Blue/White FF you see in pictures, but...

Starting Flats Flyer

John here. Picked up the plans for the flats flyer right as my second son is about to show up and my honey do build list is strong. :) Looking forward to starting soon though and since I can control the environment in my garage, I hope to have it on the water in the fall.

Re: Flats Flyer Build in Orlando

Tracy, I just picked up plans for this boat a couple of days ago. Does the plan actually call for specific lumber? What did you opt for? Cypress? Teak? I'm also thinking about a mahogany veneer up the sides to give it a more classic wood look. What kind of plywood? Did you special order the 9mil as ...
