Re: Waterproof wood glue
I know this thread is a bit old but I just wanted to add to it because I found my self doing a lot of research on adhesives for our big build. There is a modern version of Resorcinol called Aerodux 185, easily found with a google search. This is not your grand-fathers resorcinol. It cures down to 50...

Re: Rochester NY Zip build, a love story
I've been neglecting this forum! I've been distracted by our big project over at http://www.seadreamerproject.com but we continue to work on our Zip! We moved the Zip to our cottage so I would free up some space at the home shop and give me something to work on when we are at the lake. We flipped ou...

Re: Epoxy Strength
I don't think its the case here but I read it in the comments forum of an epoxy producers website when individuals were claiming that the epoxy would not kick off or set up. It sounded like they were confused by the 5 to 1 ratio thing and they were unaware that the pumps were already calibrated with...

Re: Rochester NY Zip build, a love story
Done?, I wish!! Nope I'm still working but much more slowly. The beauty of Glen-L is their plans are so good it makes you think you can do anything. That has led me to start the Diesel Duck as well. This hobby is a dangerous one, addictive how awesome it is! Framing up the zip really gave me some co...

Rust proofing after cutting threads
I need to make up several very long bolts for my build (some as big as 40 inches). I found a good price on 5/8" galvanized bar stock that I can cut to length and thread to my specifications. I don't want to use SB rod, sticker shock! After I cut the threads, and there by remove all the galvanizing f...

over powering your vessel
I have heard various things about using a larger than necessary diesel engine to power a vessel. specifically i'm referring to a full displacement trawler (21 ton) operating on a single screw at low RPM utilizing a less than a 100 HP engine (as the designer recommends). setting aside the extra cost ...

Re: Mixing by weight
Thanks guys. I was working with Rescirnol so I was just unfamiliar with mixing in that fashion. I got lazy with epoxy using the metered pumps. Everything worked out good, I maintained the temperature in my shop for about 30 hours under very high clamp pressure and things appeared to have set up prop...

Mixing by weight
This is just not clicking I my small brain. Instructions for mixing adhesive call for mixing by weight (not volume so no need for specific gravity mumbo jumbo) in the ratio of 100 to 20. 100 for the adhesive, 20 for the hardener. So if I use 16 ounces of adhesive, do I use 3.something ounces of hard...

Re: glassing plywood prior to hull installation
Such a small world! On George Buehler's diesel duck website there is a picture series of them building their boat. Must be 30 pictures of the build, from a pile of wood to launch. They did a traditional planking then covered it in 2 layers of ply. If this is the same boat, and I think it is, Mr. Bue...

Re: Waxing philosophical and boat building
Scot2640 were you EMS too? I can honestly say I like my career helping others but my true passion is working with my hands and building. It is a wonderful stress reliever. If I don't have anything to do between tasks, I've been known to just sit next to my boat and think.....about non EMS related t...
