Welcome! There are few of those floating around here. :D If you haven't bought it yet, get the Boat Building with Plywood. This will answer a lot of your questions and help you plan out various steps. And there is always the forums for questions. Post photos and ask away, and most of all have fun!

I tend to frown upon second guessing the designer, being an engineer. So, I would recommend not trying to change the shape of the hull. With those upright sides it looks like it would plow through the water rather than plane nicely. Have you thought about trying a different assembly sequence? Maybe ...

Get on the AOMCI website, lots of information and help out there to keep these older motors running. Travis24 (zip builder) is into old mercs, and may be able to point you in the right direction. Also marineengine.com has parts lists and diagrams for old motors. This can help identify what you need....

If you are doing it yourself, look at System 3 WR-LPU. It can be sprayed, but also is easy to roll and tip. The colors are semi-gloss, but you can put the gloss clear over it.
