Re: Monroe Malahini

I think i may have screwed up again! I'm using the System Three primer. On the first coat i only used part B without part A. I think i got this confused with the paint which can be used with out the crosslink. I assumed the primer was the same. As i was spraying the second coat, part A and B mixed t...

Re: Monroe Malahini

20171016_214356.jpg Wow. It's been almost four months since my last post. Haven't had much time to work on the boat. It's been 100 deg. in the shop, too hot. That and vacation, work, lots of grass cutting and grand kids soccer, it's been hard to find time to do much. At my last post I thought I was...

Re: Monroe Malahini

Thanks for the info. I've already ordered the system3. What i have sanded so far is pretty smooth. You can still see and feel a little of the weave. I plan at least one more coat of epoxy. When i have that sanded down I'll see how that looks. My order some of the Pettit. Don't know if you can mix Pe...

Re: Monroe Malahini

Haven't posted anything in awhile. No pics. The boat looks about like it did two months ago. I've gotten the fiberglass cloth embedded with two additional coats of epoxy applied. Trying to get it sanded down so I can apply move epoxy. I haven't had much time to work on it with grass cutting and gard...

Re: Quanity Questions

I have a hvlp sprayer. I've sprayed oil base enamel before with descent results. Don't know how different this would be to spray. I guess i could find out, spraying primer first. If everthing goes wrong i can always sand it off. Of course at $45 a quart that could get pricey. Matt was that 1/2 gallo...

Quanity Questions

I'm getting close to being able to start painting. I'm building the Malahini. The whole exterior of the hull will be painted. The bottom one color the sides another with a stripe separating the two. How much primer and paint for each. I plan on using the System 3 WR-LPU. Two to three coats of primer...

Re: Monroe Malahini

I've been working on getting the sides and bottom faired. Microsheres and epoxy is easier to sand. I had read this but have just now tried it. Guess I'm a slow learner. Question. How flat is flat. From frame 1 to the transom i have a slight drop, about 1/32", maybe a little more. Should i fix t...

Where to lap the cloth

Getting close to fiberglassing my Malahini. I was planning to lap at the keel and let it hang to the sheer. I know no sharp edges. I have about 1/4" radius. Thanks

Re: Monroe Malahini

Thanks Jimmy. Used a homemade long board. To fix the joints. It might a little on the stiff side. I also have some Durablocks. Wish there was something easier to sand than epoxy.
Question?? Can you put on too much epoxy before you fiberglass. Thanks again.

WHY IS HIND SIGHT ALWAYS 20/20. 20170430_184922.jpg 20170430_184716.jpg I guess i need to explain. Bright sides now is pretty much out of the question. Several things went wrong. I'll explain as best i can in hopes it will help someone else. First my scraf joints didn't turn out like I'd hope. My ca...

Re: Monroe Malahini

Peter I used two 8 ft pieces with one 2 ft.piece in the middle to make an 18 ft piece. The pieces were cut 32" wide. Mine are about a 12:1. I used a router and jig i saw on utube and finished with a sanding block i made using a sanding belt and a piece of wood cut to fit inside the belt. When I...

Re: Wooden Boats: Things to Ponder?

My thoughts. There some realy awesome looking manufactured fiberglass boats out there. If you buy one chances are someone else has one just like yours. But those boats can't compare the some of the boats you see built by people on this forum. They are also one of a kind. When someone see one of thes...

Re: Monroe Malahini

20170313_145248.jpg I got one side on. Just a dry fit. I have about 3/4" extra all the way around. How close should i get it before I epoxy it inplace, or do you usually do that afterwords. Scarfed my joints and not 100% satisfied with them i thinks they will be ok. Stained it before i glued t...
