Re: Just one of my many dumb questions

Thanks Roberta. I have been reading Glen L's book on building a boat with plywood.
Good stuff that will no doubt answer many of my questions.

Just one of my many dumb questions

Since I am in the learning process of boat building. I was wondering if I fiberglass the hull will I then have to paint the hull afterwards or will the mahogany color still show through?

Re: Butt joint on side planking

Thanks Roberta. I'm not so sure about the masterful part,LOL! Would the factory edges be the best option at the joint do you think?

Butt joint on side planking

I find myself pondering a few things while reading peoples build blogs. One that comes to mind is if you do a butt joint on the side planking and do not plan on painting the hull, won't you always be able to see a seam? I like the natural mahogany sides, not painted. I am interested in the Zip if th...

Sikaflex for white stripping

Has anyone used the white Sika flex to do the white stripping on their deck? What type is it?
Also, how did you finish the deck? Automotive clear coat, Fiberglass? What is the preferred method for finishing the deck.
I'm clueless at this stuff, but willing to learn.

Thanks everyone,
James

Zip transom curisioty question

Hey everyone, I have not even ordered my plans for the Zip I would like to build, but some thoughts roll through my tiny brain about what I have to look forward to. I decided to look for an outboard motor just to see how plentiful they might be. I'm not finding a lot by the way. At least not in a sh...

Re: Hello everyone from beautiful Michigan

Welcome aboard!!! My best advice in getting started is to plan ahead so you have the necessary tools, materials, and space to prevent getting painted into the proverbial corner. Know and understand the instructions and patterns well before making that first cut. And remember, it's only wood and it ...

Re: Hello everyone from beautiful Michigan

Welcome. We moved from West Bloomfield last summer. You are in a great area for boating! Public Lumber at 7 Mile and I-75 was a convenient source. They have some of everything and let you wander around to just look and can mill to size. I went there with my cut list and picked out just the right bo...

Re: Hello everyone from beautiful Michigan

Welcome, Im sure Ted told you, buy the plans and the boatbuilding with plywood book from Glen L. Then, grab a sheet of 3/4" marine plywood and start tracing and cutting the plywood parts with a jigsaw and suddenly you are a boatbuilder! We talked a bit about where to buy Mahogany in our area. He do...

Re: Hello everyone from beautiful Michigan

Welcome James! Lot's of builder in SE Michigan and beyond. Keep us in mind for the "flip." Thank you Jimmy, I may just take you up on that offer to help with the flip when that day comes. The start of my build is a ways off yet unfortunately. House needs new windows, and a few other honey do jobs. ...

Re: Hello everyone from beautiful Michigan

The mahogany is exactly how i bought it, it is sold as 3/4" but measures out about 13/16".....slightly thicker, i did not plane any of it just cut to shape, sanded and assembled. When i first started i didn't know what to look for in wood, now i don't go wood shopping without my straight edge! You ...
