Re: Porpoising help
Hi Mojo I built a boat very similar to the Flying Saucer but with a flat racing bottom and non- trip chimes. I was running a motor that weigh about 115 lbs and had about 40 hp. On the third pin the boat porpoised very bad and on the 4th pin position it was almost uncontrollable but the speed picked ...

Re: Refinishing 61 Merc.
I have used the following colors for Cloud White, VW Cashmere white and Ford Wimbledon white and both are very close to Cloud White. I currently have 3 white 4 cylinder Mercs side by side, a 1961 restored with Wimbledon White, 1962 restored with VW Cashmere White and a 1963 with original color in go...

Re: Merc Motor.
Hi Jeff I have a small runabout similar to the Glen-L Flying Saucer but it is of my own design. I currently run a 1964 Merc 500 and when I go to Atwood Lake I run a Mercury KG-9, because of the 25 hp limit. You can see my boat at http://www.glen-l.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?f=20&t=14659. I do not know...

Re: Merc Motor.
Mercury issued a service bulletin in the mid 1960's that said any full needle bearing motor should run 50 to 1 oil mix. Also the 1965 Service Manual C-90-25500 states to run 50 to 1 mix with Mercury Formal 50 Quicksilver oil. However with my Merc 500 I run around 32 to 1, it varies between 24 - 1 an...

Re: Dyno Mite
The TNT should be faster than the DynoMite but the DynoMite should handle rough water better. So I would make my boat selection on where I plan to do most of my boating. I currently run a flat bottom runabout similar to a D class boat just a little bigger. On smooth to moderate chop I can run over 4...

Re: Dyno Mite
Since the Dyno Mite and the Bullet are very similar boats only with different constructions methods, you should be able to come up with a speed estimate based on the results for the Bullet. Checkout Mark Finnila's build at http://www.glen-l.com/weblettr/webletters-14/webletter126.html#X and Matt Hea...

Re: ZIP Prop
I also think you should try a 10 or 9 pitch prop and check the revs, that motor should tack out at 5200 to 5600 rpm. I have seen speeds of 35.4 mph with a 10.75 x 13 Mercury prop and a Merc 300 on a smaller boat similar to the Flying Saucer but I had too big a prop, should have tried a 11 or 12 pitc...

Re: Help with porpoising
Carl your not a pain, I fully expected some comments on my post. I still believe that when building the boat you should make it as flat as possible as mentioned on page 157 of the Boatbuilding With Plywood book, after you have a flat bottom then put the hook/wedge in boat. I agree with you if I woul...

Re: Help with porpoising
I think the biggest disappointment a boat builder has is when he launches the boat for the first time and discovers that his pride and joy wants to porpoise. My boat is similar to the Flying Saucer but has a flat bottom and non-trip chines, the boat is 13ft 4 inches long and weights about 250 to 275...

Re: Converting an outboard engine to an inboard
The idea has been tried before by Fageol, Crofton or Homelite I am not sure which one but it's the same basic motor. They took a 44 cubic inch outboard made an inboard similar to your idea with the lower unit coming out of the bottom of the boat. I think the inboard/outdrives put an end to the idea....

Re: Zip setup
I have noticed several post about boat porpoising and in my option most boat porpoising is caused by two much weight in the back of boat and flexing transoms. The Zip's transom as the plans state was designed for a 40 hp motor at that time it would have been a Mark 55, that weighed about 130 lbs. A ...

Modifying Outrage
I have been wanting to build a small 14 ft boat runabout similar to Tuffy but with a Deep Vee bottom. The problem is no one makes plans for this style of boat and to be truthful I don't think I can design it myself. Glen L does make the Outrage the style of boat I want only it is to big, the plans s...

Re: Flat-turning vs Roll-up turning
A boat design from the 50's can not be made into a flat turner without a redesign. A typical flat turner has a narrow bottom to decrease drag while turning. They are normally designed to turn one way left but could be setup to turn right. Placing the fin in the center on CD will let you turn right o...

Re: Weight for a Mercury D Racing engine
I am not sure of the weight of the motor you mentioned but my guess is it should weigh in the 100 to 110 lb range. A non electric Mark 55 motor would weigh about 120 to 130 lbs. I have a stock KG 9 and it weighs 110 lbs. I hope this helps.

Re: Found Motor
The VW Cashmere white is very close to the Mercury White however I would be very careful using any Rustoleum paint I have painted several motors and have had bad luck with the Rustoleum products. If you decide to go with the VW paint go to a good auto paint store and you can get it in bulk or spray ...
