Re: Squirt in Alabama

Yeah, being able to laminate the chines/sheers makes me feel more comfortable with the scarf joints. What angle scarf did you wind up with? I assume with laminating it's less of a deal since the joints would be staggered. I plan on trying for 65 degrees if I can rig my saw properly. Don't have the p...

Re: Squirt in Alabama

After mounting the frames, I had just enough mahogany left over for the keel and maybe some of the small finishing pieces later down the road. The more it looks like a boat the more excited I get. I used a Ryobi multitool to angle and deepen the notches on the transom (this tool is awesome.. rarely ...

Re: I tried to use a hand saw once....

Absolutely. As a beginning woodworker myself I've realized glen-l plans are fairly forgiving. You got this! One thing I may suggest - find a small, cheap project to learn basic tools. (hand planes, sanders, circular saw, jig saw, etc). I started by building tables and being comfortable with the tool...

Re: Squirt in Alabama

Frames are nearly complete and 2nd coat of Totalboat 5:1 epoxy down for encapsulation. Really made the colors of the wood pop. Definitely going for a mostly bright finish after seeing the Okoume. Going to wait to encapsulate the transom. I have a feeling it won't be too difficult once it's flipped. ...

Re: Squirt in Alabama

Thanks Bill. Expensive mistake. Should have paid more attention to grain pattern than getting the most from my materials.

Re: Squirt in Alabama

Frame #1 was nearly complete. Gussets epoxied, nails driven in the right side.... and this happened. Now I have to redo the entire frame. It didn't even happen at the nail line. I have no idea.

At least the house didn't burn down.

Re: Squirt in Alabama

After using the bandsaw I'm glad I went that route. The combination of bandsaw/jigsaw made quick work of the frames. Definitely worth the $130. My frames, however, aren't nearly as clean as Jimmys. I have a long way to go as a novice woodworker. If I did it again I would have gotten a bench sander i...

Re: Squirt in Alabama

I guess one of my biggest frustrations with wood working is never having the right tool for every application and getting frustrated down the line making it work. Got a track saw to rip boards.... can't effectively rip thin stock or 9+ ft boards... now I need to buy a table saw. Got a thickness plan...

Re: Squirt in Alabama

Got this enormous 23bf African Mahogany board from City Hardwoods. Traced out the patterns and getting ready to cut. It's painful cutting into something this nice. I realized my bosch jigsaw may be a pain to use. I need a more stable way to make accurate cuts. Off to find a cheap bandsaw... or jerry...

Re: Squirt in Alabama

Thanks for the feedback. Floor is fairly level, but I don't trust some spots. I may get a couple of sand bags for the bottom braces when I stress the frame. Great idea on marking out the spot in case it moves. I used a lot of 2x8 and 2x10 for support but may regret that later when trying to awkwardl...

Squirt in Alabama

Hey All, just got the building form built and figured I'd start a thread to track the progress. I'll try and post a couple pictures later, but I did have a quick question. For the building form, how essential is it to bolt to the ground? I've beefed up the form quite a bit using scrap material and i...

Re: Birmingham hard wood supplier

Thanks Jason for the recommendation, they are really nice folks. I finally found a plywood supplier in Alabama near Mobile. http://www.ohc.net/marine-lumber Talked to Joey Skinner I wanted to avoid shipping if possible. Apparently they are a direct importer and do the milling themselves, which cuts ...

Re: Michigan Squirt Build

Just finished reading this build, what a ride. My question for ya'll is when extending the squirt to 11' (or near) were you still able to use 12' lumber? I'd imagine the shears would be longer but it would be nice to know before dumping a bit extra on longer lengths. I'd be pleased for mine to turn ...

Re: New from Birmingham, AL

Live in Crestwood/Avondale area. Have quite a small garage but large basement so maybe I can maneuver stuff around. Thanks guys, I'm sure I'll be asking tons of questions. Having some support nearby makes me even more excited to get started.

Now to clear out some space...
