Re: New Member Washington state

I doubt they will. None of the plans i have seen so far have details on.makimg a cradle. There are a few threads in this forum with discussion on building a cradle..that may be the best source for ideas. I am just about to that point in my build...im not quite sure how I'm going to do it... will hav...

Re: Ready for glass work

there are a lot of people on this forum that have had WAY more expeience than me with fiberglassing, but since this process is fresh in my mind (my layup was only 2 weeks ago) I'll give my thoughts: 1. I personally think it's easier to to all three or four coats of epoxy in one section in one day, r...

Re: Otter's Ski Bass

Then today, I was able to wrap up the port side and the remainder of the bottom. 20200502_160909.jpg 20200502_160944.jpg 20200502_160915.jpg You'll notice in the 2nd photo that I did have to fair through the veneer of the plywood bottom pieces at the bow. The sides are 3/8-inch ply, and the bottom i...

Re: Otter's Ski Bass

It took two Saturdays of work, but I finally got the fiberglassing done. last saturday, I did the transom and starboard side. Here's a couple of photos at my halfway point in the fiberglass layup:

Here's how the otter inlay turned out. I'll post more photos on my main boat build thread.

Decoupage (paper inlay)

Some of you may think I'm crazy but.... I'm going to trying put a little artwork on my boat, during the fiberglassing process, called "decoupage" i.e. a paper inlay. I got the idea years ago as I was building my kayak, using techniques from the book "The Strip Built Sea Kayak" by Nick Schade (fantas...

Re: Matt's Geronimo

All of my bachelor "Tupperware" said "Cool Whip" on the lid. I'm not sure that would be weatherproof! 😁

Re: Otter's Ski Bass

Thanks, very helpful advice guys. I do recall from my canoe that I sanded a radius on the ends, but wished i had rounded them more. Did you guys double up the fiberglass on the edges (i.e.with the transom, or at the bow)? I am not planning to install a cutwater. on my canoe, I had either a double or...

Re: Otter's Ski Bass

I'm starting to think ahead now for the fiberglassing. I have done a bit of this in the past...a canoe and a kayak...but they definitely weren't quite this large of a scale. A question for those of you who have done similar-size boats....how much of an area would it be appropriate to take on in a da...

Re: Otter's Ski Bass

I can't believe how far I've come along in the last month. I would suppose compared to some, mine is a glacial pace....but compared to the first year and a half of my boat build, I'm flying! One of the silver linings of COVID-19....lots of shop time. I'm done with planking. Here's how she looks with...

Re: Otter's Ski Bass

today was my most productive day of the whole build....5 pieces of planking glued onto the boat: 3 on the side(now finished) and two on the bottom. 20200321_180502.jpg It is really nice to see some tangible progress on the boat! I probably pounded about 200 nails today...and in doing so hit my thumb...

Re: Otter's Ski Bass

Andrew: If I recall correctly, my motor stringers are about 20" off the floor (per the plan). This has resulted in the sheer being about 5" off the floor at the stern, and about 1" off the floor in the bow. It has been about perfect for me to reach the keel (particularly since I'm vertically challen...

thanks, Barry. That is very helpful, and gives me a fair amount of comfort in sticking with my original plan.
Great looking boat, by the way!

Re: Otter's Ski Bass

I have made a lot of progress in the last few weeks. After a LOT of time laying on the floor planing the shear, I finally got everything faired to my satisfaction. Here's an example of the "final' product: 20200229_160629.jpg It was a fun process...but I'm glad to be done and moving on to the next p...
