Sweet 16 rudder

Hey folks, I need to fabricate a rudder for my Sweet 16 out of 1/4 inch SS, then weld it onto the rudder shaft. What variety of SS would you all recommend? 304, 316? Any advice recommended! Thanks.

Re: Sweet 16 shafts

Not sure of what you mean by stern post, but I offset my rudder to ease prop shaft removal. This necessitated adding some blocking to the keel. I added side shims to the keel and then an overall block on top. I also put a fiberglass tube in both the rudder and prop shaft holes to seal everything up...

Re: Rudders, struts, propshafts and more from Glen-L

Before I call Gayle again and bug her more, what is the recommendation for a skeg style rudder for my Sweet 16? Plans call for a 1/4 SS plate, I assume welded to the rudder shaft. Sticking w the theme, anybody build a plywood/fiberglass rudder?

And skeg plates/rudder support. Is that a custom item?

Re: Sweet 16 shafts

Ok, next step. I’ll go with the 1-1/8 shaft and rudder port. I notice most of the ports have a ~4 inch flange. The stern post is only 3 inches wide! I suppose I can just put in blocks on the side? Is it important that the tube length underneath goes all the way through the hull? A 3-4 inch extension...

Re: Sweet 16 shafts

Great info. Thanks everyone. I’m going to use a Beta 14 hp engine. The shaft will be almost 40 inches long with a 2.6 transmission reduction. 15 inch prop, three blade.

Super novice question: what about the rudder shaft? Same idea? Use a prop shaft or SS tubing?

I do and yes, it’s been very helpful. I wish I had a Chicago builder to chat with though!

Re: Sweet 16 shafts

Thanks. The only reason I ask is because while talking with Gayle she suggested using 1 1/8 inch prop shaft vs the 1-3/8 per the plans. It seems like most of the stock for sale on the glen-l sight is geared toward closer to an inch, inch and an 1/8th. I don’t want to skimp by any means, but cost and...
