DONOR BOAT/ GOOD IDEA OR NOT?

So as I get farther along in my barrelback build, im starting to think about the driveline, steering and trailer etc. so it seems to me that an older inboard ski boat such as a ski nautique or supra would be a great donor. Couldn't a lot of the parts be reused in the barrelback build? Am I correct i...

OKOUME PLYWOOD VS MARINE GRADE PLYWOOD

In building my stem and breasthook as well as the transom how imperative is it that I use the okoume plywood 1088 grade because I have seen a marine grade plywood that they sell at Menards? Now I know that theres going to be a difference in appearance between the two woods, but how much of a differe...

Re: BOTTOM FRAME MEMBER NOT WIDE ENOUGH

Thanks Neel, I hadn't thought of that, but it seems that it will be a great solution. so I've gone ahead and ordered a biscuit joiner and some biscuits off of Ebay and that should resolve my issue. thanks again.

BOTTOM FRAME MEMBER NOT WIDE ENOUGH

Im sure my topic explains most of it, I have to make bottom frames that are wider then the wood I've been able to find and purchase. S o I have to somehow do it in two pieces, but whats the best way to do this? use a plywood gusset for support, or maybe two gussets? any examples of what others have ...

ATTACHING DECK PLANK USING LAP JOINT

If im understanding everything correctly , im too use a lap joint on all my deck beams in my frames with the deck beam mounting on the forward side of the boat. well thats how I've been doing it and thats what my plans seem to be calling for. So heres my question, in the book building with plywood, ...

EPOXY STRENGTH TEST- ON YOU TUBE

Yesterday I happen to catch the latest boat build video on you tube from the guys on the Acorn to Arabella channel. They seem to be having a problem with glue holding up on some of the scarf joints they were making. It got real interesting to see how it all worked out, not only what they figured out...

Thanks for the great information Roberta, that helps very much, also just wanted to tell you I've been reading your Torpedo build here on the forum and have been enjoying it very much as well as learning a bunch. So, your saying its my choice on what joints I use, and as far as the top deck beam, I ...

FRAME LAYOUT ISSUE

So im transferring my frame patterns over to my wood so I can begin cutting it out, when it occurred to me that I'm not sure where im suppose to cut the frames at? how can I tell the cut line on the plans? I'm guessing the cut line is the staggered line and the line that is solid you don't cut? am I...

Re: New Builder in San Antonio, Tx area

Just curious, what kind of material did you use to make the templates from? having a set makes a lot of sense and sounds like something I may need to do, So you made like each individual piece and they are full pieces? Not half like the plans are? if the materials aren't to costly, I may have a new ...

QUESTION ABOUT SCARFING JOINT IN MOTOR STRINGERS

Today I picked up the mahogany I needed to start building my frames, I was able to find a place local to me that actually had African Mahogany but a limited amount, and sizes. I was also trying to resolve the issue of finding the wood for my motor stringers. I seem to be having problems finding 2 x...

Re: BARRELBACK BUILD FROM TOLEDO

this may sound d like a dumb question but I just got off the phone from Toledo plywood and they don't carry the okuume 1088, it has to be ordered and its cost is roughly $150 a sheet for 4'x8'x 1/2". does this sound high? because I was hearing prices around $60 to $75 a sheet. but my question is, I ...

Re: BARRELBACK BUILD FROM TOLEDO

Thanks Gayle, I'm new to all this and I guess I just have a ton of questions about the best way to proceed is, I received my plans yesterday and today I've been working diligently on putting together the materials I'm gonna need to get me started on the frames and the building form. I'm going to try...
