Re: Barrelback Seating

I'm about a month ahead of you on my Barrelback build and have been considering the same thing. It's not traditional but I think it would be more practical for my needs. Bill, when you say add all of the stretch to the cockpit what do you mean? In my head this would mean adding 6" between the three ...

Re: Florida Barrelback

Thanks Jim! That was exactly what I was thinking on the transom and the drain idea is great. I think I’ll borrow that! Your boat is beautiful and I’ve looked at your posts many times for inspiration. The only reason I ask about the length is space is really tight. I was leaning towards the extra foo...

Re: Florida Barrelback

I’m finishing the last frame tonight which means I’m a transom away from starting the building form. It also means I’m at the point of no return on boat length. What all that really means is it’s stupid question time, so here goes... 1. Do I install the camber boards on the transom before or after i...

Re: Mist Miss - Desert Build

You are about a month ahead of me. I've been debating having the stringers milled as well. The one gap in my shop is a jointer. I may go this way as well. They came out very nice!!!

Re: Florida Barrelback

If (and that's a BIG if) I understand the way the transom goes together correctly you should be able to move the camber boards up or down without affecting the shape.

Am I hearing that if the camber boards are installed to plan they potentially interfere with the exhaust?

Re: Florida Barrelback

Thanks Matt! That pic is exactly what I needed! This isn’t that hard. It seems a boat is built one well built piece at a time!

Re: Florida Barrelback

Time to figure out the transom. This has me scratching my head a little so I built a (very rough) cardboard mock up. I think I have this right now. The transom is basically a cylindrical section intersected by another cylindrical section? The camber boards keep the same arc in plan view but the ends...

Re: Florida Barrelback

So, I found out today that I am competing with a local legend for mahogany. Anyone that has been to Tampa and dined appropriately has eaten at the Columbia restaurant in Ybor City. My lumber source happens to be in Ybor city and the Columbia, which is a block away, is building an addition to their r...

Re: Florida Barrelback

Thanks guys! The wood kayak is a CLC boat I built last year. It was the trial run for this project. Here’s the finished boat: A512B21B-F970-4A3E-BCBF-46CFBDA67423.jpeg WDE Bill! Here’s hoping college football happens this year. I’m pretty meticulous about sawdust. If I leave it in the garage the kid...

Re: Florida Barrelback

Still building a boat. I lost two weeks to injury and one week to a family visit. Unfortunately I seem to have depleted the supply of mahogany in the Tampa Bay Area. More in stock on Wednesday. Should have frames done by July. I felt the need to do a little mock up today since a pic of a stack of fr...

Re: Florida Barrelback

I can’t find anything in the instructions or on the plans about frame fasteners. Searching the forums it looks like nails at the gussets is the way to go. Is that correct? Same for the floor timbers and deck beams?

Re: Florida Barrelback

I actually got off work before dark so started cutting frame templates from MDF. I’ll use a router and a pattern bit to cut the actual frames. Re: Florida Barrelback

My only other boat was a stitch and glue kayak from a kit so I think it’s safe to call this my first boat.
Matt, I’ve read your thread many times. There’s a lot of helpful information in there and in the forum in general. I hope I can add as much to this collective knowledge base!
