Neels method has worked for me. Some LED indicator leads are as small as 20ga, just strip enough insulation to fold the bare end until you get the right size for the crimp. The connector heat shrink may not contract enough to make a seal on the smaller wire so you might need to build up the insulati...

A brief no-pics update... The transport company I've been working with just notified me they're getting out of the business so I'm scrambling to find a replacement. Great looking dash Matt! Re: instrument lights you might consider a separate switch with dimmer so you could dial in the effect you want. LED's are great... you can get red or blue as well as white.
