Re: Building my Tahoe and having a blast!
Thanks man, and I hope you may have found some useful information! I'd currently advise to pay attention to how things want to lay between frames 8-10. That, along with that bottom to side transition in the same area can be a real head scratcher. I lapped it like they showed in the "Boat Building wi...

Re: Deck Striping
I used microbaloons because they are white and easy to sand. No issues yet. She does stay in my shop unless on the lake.

Re: Hello from Texas
With your background, (mine is similar) you shouldn't have any issues modifying the plans to suit you in that respect. I almost opened mine up (wish I had after having to climb down the back to the added swim deck, but the admiral (wife) preferred the deck). I actually went so far as to delete the r...

Re: Why would you need a 2nd set of Barrelback plans?
You can do it with 1 set. The plans are generally for half a boat, as the other half is a mirror image. I guess there are several reasons, from framing them to having a full set (which isn't necessarily needed.

Re: Who's Going and Where
Again, wish I could have made it. Life tossed me a curve. They closed our helo base 10 April, and I am now an anesthesia assistant for an oral surgeon with no PTO right now. Hopefully next year. This one has been rough so far: my Dad passed, job changed, father in law passed. God is good though, as ...

Re: Building my Tahoe and having a blast!
Bluesman, I will concur with Tom on the battens up front. I noticed on my Tahoe23 that it would leave a flat spot if I didn't extend my battens to the stem. It IS a harsh, batten breaking bend as I learned. My solution was to split the batten back to the frame where you cut it off, bend it in while ...

Re: Tom's Tahoe
Looks nice with the matched planks. But now, you must take up the sanding cross, because "I farmed that out" is unacceptable!

Re: Tom's Tahoe
Well, I built it to use, so it's going to get scuffed. I keep telling myself that, anyway. I did put the goalpost guides on the trailer. They are padded, and they should have been taller. Interestingly, I recall a pro boat restorer mentioning on a vintage boat forum somewhere that those types of gui...

Re: Tom's Tahoe
 I can't take credit for it because I came across it building guitars. Dye makes the grain "pop." If you aren't glassing above the WL, you should be good to go in my opinion. Bury that seam in the bootstripe! And Do NOT use uprights on your trailer. I did, and had to load with a quartering 20kt...

Re: Tom's Tahoe
The problem with filling the staple holes is that if you do like I did and use a mix of epoxy and sawdust, the wood will soak up the epoxy. That will create a situation that requires a huge amount of sanding to get rid of all that, and good fairing may suffer. If you use a filler, you may end up wit...

Re: Tom's Tahoe
Stand back. Take an overall look. Then, go with your gut feelings. It is YOUR boat. I dyed my girl, and used the same mix in the deck as the hull. Staining does blend the differing characteristics of the boards. That is why I did it. More homogeneous. If you do so, things should be more uniform in c...

Re: Tom's Tahoe
Tom, No one will notice when they look at the overall boat. Don't sweat the small stuff unless you want to. As builders we know every flaw. "Perfection is the enemy of the good enough." If you want perfection, GO FOR IT! But if someone criticizes your imperfections as minor as Raptor brads, ask them...
