Re: Neel's Palm Beach 22 build

Peter, I think the plans are a combination of the original drawings brought somewhat up to date with CAD programs. I have looked at the plans from Wooden Boat and they look very much the same. Just they do require lofting which I am not into.... As far as strength of the transom goes, the side to si...

Re: Neel's Palm Beach 22 build

I fitted the starboard side piece to the transom and glued it in place. It will take some belt sanding to get the "twist" in it. The port side piece will get glued in tomorrow.

Re: Neel's Palm Beach 22 build

I don't know where you might think it is concave. If you look at the profile from front to back, the outside radius is correct. If you look at it from the side, you can see how it has to be sanded with a twist from the curved top piece to match the straight bottom piece. I think you could have come ...

Re: Neel's Palm Beach 22 build

I spent about two hours this morning fitting the port transom side curved piece. I took a little off here and a little off there until it fit nicely where it belongs... It is very hard to clamp it in place because of the curves. So now I have to do the starboard side and then figure out how to finis...

Re: Neel's Palm Beach 22 build

Steve..... I am satisfied with the plans but, as I have said, everything is there and you have to look for it. As far as the transom goes, the plans are somewhat lacking. I had to use a CAD program to figure out the radius on two different parts. I was also missing a couple critical measurements. Af...

Re: Neel's Palm Beach 22 build

Here is a picture that was included with the plans of the part I am working on now. Maybe it will help you visualize the bends and twists. This is not my transom, just hopefully what it will look like when I finish this part of the task. Then after the side pieces are in, it gets two battens which g...

Re: Neel's Palm Beach 22 build

Curved side pieces are glued up and rough sanded. Now they will have to be shaped with a curve and a twist going top to bottom. Then they have to be fitted so at the top, it goes under the top piece, and at the bottom, it goes outside of the bottom piece. This may be a clamping nightmare.

Re: Neel's Palm Beach 22 build

I have been working on the transom curved side pieces. I made a pattern for the router with a radius of 20 11/16. I figured out the radius using a CAD program as it is not specified in the plans. Each piece needs to be almost 6" across as it will also curve slightly forward as it goes from the ...

Re: Neel's Palm Beach 22 build

I've been working on gluing up and shaping (in two planes) the top piece that forms the top of the transom. Band saw and sanding station were extremely helpful here. I have also glued four boards together that will be used to make the curved laminations of the two transom sides. This transom is a re...

Re: Neel's Palm Beach 22 build

This morning I shaped the front transom piece that goes side to side, used a dado to put limbers in, and glued it to the transom assembly... I am also working on laminating mahogany pieces to form the upper curved transom piece. That piece curves from side to side as well as top to bottom. A slightl...

Re: Neel's Palm Beach 22 build

Tom... I put the limbers aft so it will drain while moving as well as when it is on a trailer.... Bill... I actually put two garboard drain plugs in the bottom of my Gentry rather than through the transom, very close to the transom, and one on each side of the keel. They don't hinder performance at ...

Re: Neel's Palm Beach 22 build

I have been working on gluing up the pieces for the transom. I have completed the transom knee component. It's all starting to make sense, but not complete sense !!

Re: Neel's Palm Beach 22 build

This morning I cut and notched the piece that goes between the transom knees. Then I couldn't resist, so I clamped some pieces along with pattern pieces together to get an idea of how everything will eventually go together. Still a little confused about the transom width measurement along the bottom...
