Re: Neel's Palm Beach 22 build

I am up to frame six. This is where the hull starts to get too wide for full size drawings of the frames so you deal with "half drawings". When I made the patterns, I used two sheets of carbon paper so I could transfer the lines to both the pattern plywood as well as the underside of the d...

Re: Neel's Palm Beach 22 build

The first picture shows frame 7 pieces with patterns taped on and ready for the router. The second picture I put in to show another way to clamp something. I hot glued two blocks onto the two bottom pieces near where they join in the center and then glued both bottom pieces and clamped to the blocks...

Re: Neel's Palm Beach 22 build

I use West System epoxy resin and fast hardener. So I have a gallon of resin and a quart or so of hardener each with a pump that mixes the proper amount of each. Over the years I have gotten pretty good at estimating the quantity needed to do whatever I am doing. But many times there is just a littl...

Re: Neel's Palm Beach 22 build

I have glued frame 8 together and am working on the gussets. I have started frame 7 by again checking the patterns against the full size drawing. Then I transferred the pattern outlines to the mahogany. It is now ready for the band saw. I am going to work on two frames at a time as that will maximiz...

Re: Neel's Palm Beach 22 build

Doug.... I followed many builds as I was building my Gentry and found out how helpful this forum is. I can't imagine building your first boat without advice from others. Also, I have followed Roberta's three builds along with the refinishing job she did on her Zip. Her threads have been so much help...

Re: Neel's Palm Beach 22 build

I got all pieces routed and I did a final fitting over the plans before gluing. I had to do a very small amount of sanding to get a perfect fit. I used #10 biscuits on all four joints and glued it up with thickened epoxy. Tomorrow I will glue and ring nail the gussets on the corners on both sides of...

Re: Neel's Palm Beach 22 build

All pieces for frame nine have been cut slightly larger all the way around. Then the two-sided carpet tape is applied and the pattern goes on top. Everything is now ready for the router.

Re: Neel's Palm Beach 22 build

Yes Ken.... #9 is the first full frame forward of the transom. There are also partial frames between the full frames and they are numbered 9.5, 8.5, etc. The partial frames don't have sides, just the bottom section running from chine to chine.

Re: Neel's Palm Beach 22 build

Thanks Bryan I had all the mahogany milled to 7/8" thickness for frames 9,8,7, and 6. I am starting with frame 9. First, I cleaned my shop up some and then set up my construction table. I stapled the full size drawing of frame 9 to the table and stapled clear plastic over the drawing. Then I ch...

Re: monaco planking thickness

On my Gentry, I used two layers of 6mm Okoume plywood on the sides and bottom and topped that with 1/8" mahogany planking. The deck is also two layers of 6mm plywood, but topped with 3/8" mahogany.

Re: Neel's Palm Beach 22 build

I have faired everything so it's ready for encapsulation. I just ordered mahogany for four of the frames. I should be able to get them finished before we head to Florida in January. This milestone should make everyone happy... After today, no more transom pictures !!

Re: Neel's Palm Beach 22 build

Thanks Matt, Bill, and Carl I faired the bottom batten with the rest of the transom assembly and glued in the middle batten. Tomorrow I will get the whole thing faired and a couple areas touched up with thickened epoxy. Then final finish sanding and it will be ready to encapsulate. Thanks to everyon...
