Re: more sno too soon

Yeah, that cloud system looks pretty ominous.....I know this winter is a strange one for sure all over north america. Here in newfoundland we've had an inch or two here and there, more rain than anything.....it's pretty bad when people are out playing golf up here in january, or even walking in shor...

Here is a pic of the side rail in question, can you see how the rail has a sway in it about 4' ahead of the transom?

It's ok, hardly noticeable in the pic with the girls taking the attention away from it

Re: Moving on from dreaming to doing.

Joey, I too have been a dreamer about building my own for far too many years. I grew up around boats having family friends with sailboats and being a member of the local yacht club as well as learning to sail in a sabot (8ft sailing dinghy). I am hoping and praying that sometime in the new year I wi...

Re: keel appendages

I think my biggest problem would be sourcing the lead here locally....just about the same as for steel....altho there are a few steel fabricators here in town.....for now that is.....

keel appendages

not sure if this question has been asked before, but when making the keel appendage for the larger sailboats, are there other options for weight besides lead or steel? I was thinking about using concrete????? is that an option???? I haven't got the plans and patterns for the boat yet, but just want ...

Re: idea for steering the francis drake....

And yes, being on the island of newfoundland you need an ocean going vessel..... Here we prefer to stop the use of beagles for hunting, instead having them as family pets......"dogs are pets, beagles are family" We rescue beagles left abandoned etc, and send them to loving homes across canada......I...

Re: idea for steering the francis drake....

have pm'ed gaffrig24 to see how he did his, but it shouldn't be too hard. Was thinking about a rack and pinion system of some sort, and of course would leave enough of the rudder stock to use the tiller in an emergency. Any and all suggestions will be taken into consideration

Re: idea for steering the francis drake....

I wasn't looking at pedestal steering for the FD, I remember there was a 21' friendship sloop kit 24 years ago that I saw at the toronto boatshow that had wheel steering. I much prefer wheel over tiller.....takes up less room on the flightdeck.

idea for steering the francis drake....

I have been looking at the study plans for the FD, and am wondering how hard it would be to change from tiller to wheel steering with the wheel mounted on the back of the flightdeck? how difficult would it be to make a modification for this to occur?????

Hello fellow boatbuilders living so close to the sea, sailing has been running in my blood for many hundreds of years. I have been wanting to start construction of the 29 ft Francis Drake for over 17 years, and hopefully soon will be acquiring the plans and patterns to start my dream. I was born and...
