Key Largo Build - Boise/Charleston

Great pleasure to welcome Mickfly to Boise today, he was passing through town on his way to the Oregon. We have been leap frogging each other for about a year building the same design and helping each along the way. Guess I have been distracted with work and a bunch of other stuff so he felt compell...

Re: Key Largo Update - Boise, ID

Haven't yet I have been searching for the post that talked about the change and why. When I find I will dig deeper. For now looks like I am going down to stain + sealer. Still debating whether to sand through the stain or not will have to see what it looks like when it is stripped, need to make sure...

Re: Key Largo Update - Boise, ID

Thinking just the varnish, just put tape to protect the line between finish and sheer filler as I mate the two and pulled off what appears to be just varnish. Stain seems untouched. One pic below dry and one wet, no stain on wet rag

Re: Key Largo Update - Boise, ID

Awesome help as always, think it is definitely petit sealer under the varnish that's the culprit. That will teach me to read too much before I do something.

Re: Key Largo Update - Boise, ID

Thanks the varnish has been there since October so think I will have to start again, will make fairing in the decking easier. Will have to think of what to seal with before the varnish this time any suggestions welcome. Always go back to good old CPES or has anyone used an epoxy, or just varnish. As...

Re: Key Largo Update - Boise, ID

Ok Guys and Gals need some group therapy here. After stain I sealed before the varnish, I forgot the product think it was petit ez sealer, instead of CPES. Read that Danenburg had moved away from CPES to the product as the color is not effected as much, plus no odor which is good. The issue as I am ...

Re: Key Largo Update - Boise, ID

If you ever make it to Idaho I will take you for a ride in one that seems to do ok even when its about a 100F. You look really cool but in reality are dripping as the thing is so hot. Couple of pics, the car at the Warhawk air museum here in town. We had a car show at the museum and gave a presentat...

Re: Key Largo Update - Boise, ID

Thanks Andy for the visit nice to meet someone that has finished one of these projects in person. After a break since the flip I have started in earnest again, getting carlins, deck clamps hard back and next week the sheer fillers ready for the cover boards. Bill yes everything is nice and locked do...

Re: Key Largo Update - Boise, ID

Thanks for the feedback, managed to pick up the motor with transmission for $400, last owner never used it, sitting around for quite a few years as you can see was cut out of the original single prop boat, the boat is still attached!. Does hand turn but will need a complete strip down. Has a new gea...

Re: Key Largo Update - Boise, ID

New question for the group.

Locally there is a Chriscraft 283F motor/transmission for sale, looks like it may be a better bet than the scary donor motor I already have, in size weight etc and the price is good.

Any thoughts on using one in a 20ft Key Largo, as new they were 184HP.

Thanks

Bryan

Re: Key Largo Update - Boise, ID

Flip has happened, lots of help and many hands did make quick and light work of the problem.

And thanks to Mick for the Glen-L Superman shirt that unexpectedly arrived in the mail a few days ago.

Re: Key Largo Update - Boise, ID

Thanks Matt, I ended up about an inch higher on boat than the plan suggested (boat right side up) and have a slight curve as you get towards bow. This way I kept the boot stripe as flat as possible at the sharp change in angle from side to underside at the bow. If I wanted the boot stripe on the sid...

Key Largo- Boise, ID

Couple of pics, ready for flip. Last job was to spray the boot stripe which came out great, setting the tape correctly and masking the boat off was the time-consuming part. I used fine-line tape from an automotive paint supply store, was not expensive and peels off just fine with no residue.
