Re: How Many Hours Did Your Minuet Take You?

Rob, I actually saw your reply when I was doing some research here a while back. If I'm reading you correctly, you're saying you could probably build a Minuet in 240 hours or less. Would it be a fair assessment, then, that a first-timer would probably take twice as long (~500 hours), by your estima...

Re: How Many Hours Did Your Minuet Take You?

here is a reply I posted some weeks ago to a guy who was interested in having a professional boat builder build one for him: That is the $64,000 question in boat building. Since you would be having a professional boat builder build it he should be able to knock it out pretty quickly. But even there ...

Re: idea for steering the francis drake....

We live on an 80 acre former farm (about 14 tillable acres the balance field and forest). The dogs are not used for hunting, but are free to roam our land. They were also shown the boundries and stay within. That took some time to reinforce. The beagle-cross did a good job saving our vegetable garde...

Re: idea for steering the francis drake....

Thank you Rob, I shall do that asap.....guess it's time to check the online bookstores etc.....would be nice to have a unique Francis Drake for my cruising as I do live on an island out in the atlantic ocean. Well, if you're living on an island in the Atlantic Ocean you certainly should have such a...

Re: Working hours for minuet 15

in the meantime i found fancy free, could it be possible that this boat takes almost less time than the minuet? Not likely. It is a 21 foot boat. there is a fair amount more real estate to cover in building that boat than a Minuet. But it still would be a simple enough boat to build. Plywood on fra...

Re: idea for steering the francis drake....

I would suggest picking up a copy of "Buehler's Backyard Boatbuilding". He shows inexpensive ways of making wheel steering, either stand alone or attached to a tiller. As those who've looked at Buehler's designs know he does not design light displacement boats so everything is robust. He also favors...

Re: Minuet changes

I only used the 1/2" Meranti on the bottom as far forward as it would cofortably go. It will bend some, but the bow is a big change in angles, so the 1/4" strips went on well.

Re: Wokring hours for minuet 15

That is the $64,000 question in boat building. Since you would be having a professional boat builder build it he should be able to knock it out pretty quickly. But even there he is limited by epoxy drying times and how much work space he has to lay out various tasks he can do simultaneously. The pro...

Re: Minuet changes

The picture in the archives had not progressed to planking the bottom yet. I had a small problem in that the supplier was out of 3/8" Meranti when I ordered so I used 1/2" Meranti on the bottom Since bending 1/2" to the bow was too much, I cut strips on 1/4" Meranti and cold molded two layers which ...

Re: Minuet changes

Another couple of questions regarding the Minuet in general: 1. Besides the steel centerboard, is there any other internal ballast called for in the plans? No. 1/2" steel about 160lbs But I figure keeping heavy items low and around the center of the boat will add to ballast. = 12 volt battery, anch...

Re: Minuet Musings

I kind of like the bilge keels and skeg for the rudder if you can engineer it all strong enough. I considered a keel (center) but decided against it because I really wanted my boat to be easy to launch on shallow angled "crappy" boat ramps like most fishing boats can be. But that is part of the fun ...

Re: Minuet changes

Before I stopped at the end of September, I was working on the cabin. I had build the cabin sole beam, and cut out the plywood in the V and on the port side. That allowed me to sit and lay down and see what room I would have. I found I have ample sitting headroom in the cabin now. I was also very ha...

Re: Minuet changes

Thanks Doug.

I think they will prove to be worth the extra building time. I really like angled seat fronts, too.

Re: Minuet changes

There are rain gutters around the hatch openings that also support the seat tops. I also made a angled foot rest that made building the seats a bit more complicated, but it is nice to place feet against when the boat is heeled and also does not "cut into" the backs of your legs. I built a well vente...
