Monaco bottom: 3 plys or 2 plys?

I'm trying to decide how many plywood plys to put on the bottom of my Monaco. The plans call for the bottom to be 5/8" thick and the sides 1/2" thick. I don't know whether this included or excludes the final 1/8" thick final mahogany plys. I'm using 1/4" Okume plywood for the under layers. Two layer...

Thanks to all who responded. Great ideas! I think I'll try Woodbooger's plastic pipe strapping. Any idea where to buy it? Don't know if I've seen it in Home Depot. Same with the "nippers" for removing the staples. It's a rather obscure tool, I think. And last question for Woodbooger.....what is "fam...

Leaving Staples in?

I am just beginning the plywood covering of my Monaco. From reading the forum I see that most folks are pulling all their staple out after the glue has dried. I'm using a pneumatic stapler with 1/2" narrow crown stainless staples. Even at the lowest setting they are being driven too deep to dig out ...

Motor Stringer Width Spacing?

I'm at the point in my Monaco build where I need to attach my motor stringers to my building form. The "instructions" say 26 inches apart. Is that inside to inside, or center to center, or outside to outside? My motor stringers are 1 13/16 in thickness. The instructions also say to attach the motor ...

Bit size for Glen-L Bronze Screws?

I'm beginning to assemble the frames for my Monaco and find that the bronze screws supplied in the Glen-L fastner kit, are an unusual size. A #2 driver bit is too large for the phillips head slots, and a #1 bit is too small......slips out and buggers the head. Has anyone found a driver bit that work...

There are two paths to building an RV airplane. The first path is to purchase the plans and scrounge your own parts, materials and supplies. The second path is to purchase a "kit" in which all the parts and raw materials are supplied (minus engine, avionics, paint and upholstery). When purchasing th...

Thanks to Everyone

Many thanks to Bruce and all who responded and offered me encouragement. As they say.........a picture is worth a thousand words! As soon as I saw Bruce's photos, the whole thing snapped into focus and I was able to decipher the plans. Whoopee!!!!!!!!! Having said that, I wonder why with all the gre...

Transom Drawings

Having just started my Monaco project I have completed the cut out of my frames, gussets, stem, breasthook, and floor timbers. However I'm stuck on the transom???????? I've stared at the drawings for a week now, turning them left, then right, then upside down, and I still can't figure out how to cut...

Why the 1/2" spiral bit? I would think the 1/8" would make for sharper corners in the notches. Do you then use a chisel to true up the corners after removing most of the material with the router?

Thanks Robert, and all who replied. VERY helpful information and as a newbie I really need help! Quick question.......what does a "spiral" router bit look like? I have a router but not sure if I have one of these. Are they readily available at Home Depot or is this a special order kind of bit? Garry...

Best tool for notching?

Here's a really dumb question from a newbie. What is the best tool to use, or the best technique to cut notches in the frames for battens? I'm just starting to build a Monaco.

Newbie looking for Florida builder

Hi everyone, I have been surfing the Glen-L website for weeks and admiring all the beautiful projects you folks have built. I am gung ho to build one myself. My interests are in the Biscayne, Barrellback, Monaco, Riviera or Tahoe. Before I begin this project I'd like to talk to and visit someone who...
