Re: Questions on cutting out frames, layout board and jig/ba

Cyclone - thanks for the help. After looking at the plans again, I did find a reference to a 4" minimum width for all frames, so that answers one big question. Also noticed the minimum overlap for frame gussets, where the side and bottom frame pieces are joined together, so that answers my question ...

Questions on cutting out frames, layout board and jig/base

Hi folks, Sorry to have posts on a couple of differnet sections, but I think these questions belong here. Have plans for the 23' Double Eagle in Aluminum, and may have missed something on the plans, but I am a bit foggy. I see the patterns for outside dimension / edges of frames, to transfer onto la...

Re: plans for DoubleEagle-al - am I missing "how to use patt

On my plans, most frames look to be about 3- 4" wide (on the more vertical sides on the boat) but on the bottoms of the frames, some appear about the same with while other seem much larger, and have things like tank edges, and engine cutouts - but at least on the plans they seem to have different wi...

Re: plans for DoubleEagle-al - am I missing "how to use patt

Thanks Jeff for the help. I laid out the plans last night, and read all of the notes on the patterns. I think the main thing I am wondering right now is where to find the info on how wide the frame members should be. For example, I see the outside dimensions of the frames on the full patterns, and a...

Re: plans for DoubleEagle-al - am I missing "how to use patt

OK. Found the "how to use full sized patterns" writeup on the GlenL site. I see how one can transfer the outline of a frame onto the layout sheet, using carbon paper or "scoring" through the pattern. But, I am still not seeing how to then cut out the proper sized pieces, for a large alumnimum sheet,...

plans for DoubleEagle-al - am I missing "how to use patterns

Hi Folks, This will be my 1st build, so complete novice reading plans. In the booklet "Aluminum Boatbuilding Guide", which came with the plans, it says"How to use patterns" instructions are provided with the patterns. Is this be a separate booket that I should have received, or is this something tha...

Re: Help in selecting gear reduction ratio for Double Eagle

Thanks for the advice. I have asked the local fella what his bottom price is on the 3.0l engine alone, as I think I will stick with my original plan to use shaft drive. If he doesn't come down alot, I will keep my eye out for used truck engines and dead old boats with decent or rebuildable engines, ...

Help in selecting gear reduction ratio for Double Eagle buil

Hoping someone can help. I am waiting for my double eagle plans to arrive. In meantime, I have a chance to buy a used velvet drive 2:1 gearbox, with damper plate, bellhousing and u-joint / prop shaft coupler for $500. I do not have a motor yet, and will be looking at used (cheap) truck gas or diesel...

New member from Nova Scotia - interested in aluminum build

Hi Folks, I have been hoping to build my 1st boat (17 - 22') in aluminum for the last couple of years, and I think it will finally be a go this fall / winter. (Had our 1st baby last summer, so it's been a hectic year). I have done extensive refit jobs to my 1978 Seafarer 30' sailboat so have experie...

Double Eagle in Aluminum - best sheet size for nesting parts

Hi Folks, New to this forum. Have planned on building a 17 - 23 ft Aluminum boat for the last couple of years, and am finally going to start this fall. (Wife gave me the go-ahead, after having our 1st baby a year ago, and being too busy last winter to tackle this) When I look at the materials list f...
