Re: Aluminum Boat Cabins

I would certainly appreciate the advice and help of Kevin and Yofish, once i begin to work on it in the late fall. A couple of notes: - i don't really need a large, enclosed deck at the bow as no v-berth needed for sleeping. I would like to incorporate perhaps a sit down head into the cabin / consol...

Re: Aluminum Boat Cabins

thanks for the great explanations, as always Kevin!
I will not know dimensions until the late fall, but will take all of this into consideration at that time.
The "Wilkes worked" boat was a pic on page 1 of this thread.

Re: Aluminum Boat Cabins

Yofish - I am sure that (as an amateur, first time builder..) I would be happy and content with any of the boats or cabin tops which you have still been less than happy with... I will ask a dumb question - is what you are describing in your drawing similar to what Kevin did for the cabin side's (abo...

Re: Aluminum Boat Cabins

Hi Kevin, Thanks for all of the observations, ideas and comments! I was thinking of pipe in the 2 or 2 1/2" range for the verticals, but as you mention, perhaps "copying" the t-top designs of smaller bridged piping would be worth a look. I had not thought of press braking/ forming for strength -so I...

Re: Aluminum Boat Cabins

Hi Kevin, I have been using my 25' Aluminum Glen L Double Eagle for the past 3 seasons, but it is still far from finished. (4 and 6 year old and life cuts into building time...) I have lots of 3/16" sheet left and this winter plan on using my cheap OSB floor sections as templates and finally weld in...

Re: update on engine troubles - steam/water in exhaust

thanks - the link shows some very nice manifold products, but i didn't see any listed Cummins engines. I imagine they would be as much as I paid for the complete engine anyway... new one from Ebay is on the way for $400USD

Re: update on engine troubles - steam/water in exhaust

Hi Ken - nice to hear from you. i think the engine is fine - i had the head off and cylinders looked good - made a mistake and assumed i would not get the exhaust bolts out easily (in the field) to troubleshoot the water leak so i chose to take the head off (complete with exhaust and turbo). I had s...

Re: update on engine troubles - steam/water in exhaust

thanks for the input Bill. I know the engine runs strong, and knock on wood... if i replace the manifold, i think i should have many hours of use - the engine is old, and will have small issues, but i think it is worth the investment.

update on engine troubles - steam/water in exhaust

update - unfortunately, after redoing the gaskets in the water cooled manifold and turbo, and then running the boat a few more times, still using water as coolant, the problem reappeared intermittently - never any visible steam out the exhaust, so the new gaskets may have helped some.. but there was...

Re: Building The Vera Cruise

Hi Carl, Just in comment on automatic type bilge pumps vs float switch controlled ones like yours. I am no expert in bilge pumps, and on my sailboat it was a manual switch, but the boat took on very little water from the gore-tex stuffing at the shaft. Anyway, when building my Double Eagle, I had re...

Re: over powering your vessel

I know this is an old post... the Cummins 4BT (3.9M) is normally 150hp, very common and easily rebuilt- or available as rebuilt from several sources. may not be relevant for a displacement vessel, but one thing I did for my boat was found my engine first, 4bt 150hp, and then decided to stretch the b...

Re: Best Diesel Brand?

Yanmars are great, as mentioned. The Cummins 6BT is a bit louder, normally 210hp, and very common and reliable. Can buy them rebuilt from several vendors.

Re: video of the islander

Indeed beautiful boa and thanks for sharing as well. 2 questions, if you don't mind: -how long from start to launch? - the video of the flip has me guessing... - I noticed smoke or maybe steam in the exhaust during the video - was that an issue or did you get it straightened out yet? I ask as I just...
